<br />It does not gray out the "outside" FX area. Only the D3-family DSLRs will gray out the area outside of DX in that mode.</p>

<p>You are incorrect Shun. I have a D700 and it <em>does indeed</em> gray out the area outside the DX crop.</p>
Old topic, but relevant since I went looking this week.
My D700 (S/N 2290114, A=1.04, B=1.03) was indeed displaying a shaded area in the viewfinder whenever I attached a DX AF-S lens -- ***until this week***. The sudden change surprised me right away. I bought this used unit several years ago, on KEH *I think*, with an insanely-low shutter-count of 729 and it has never given me a moments trouble until this. It is 20,811 shots now.
Scott, I cannot explain why my camera was showing the shaded are when it supposedly could not, but I second your experience. It's a shame that I didn't run across this thread before this week...now I only get the rectangle, but I know for a fact that it used to shade.
Perhaps in the 12 years since someone ran across an explanation...

Before I bought the aftermarket ones, I resorted to using a Quantum battery-pack and cable. Works well, but looks funny (got laughed once at by someone in a car on a trail road while hiking in the woods. ;- )

Nice to see D1H-mate here :)

As much as I love my D200/D300/D700, the D1H is often my favorite. It has a character all its own. I do wish it had come with a lighter-body twin sometimes. Finding aftermarket batteries with reportedly better life than the originals helped a lot with usability.

I had to look up the 'Cd' error; it does show in an illustration on p34 of the manual (link here if yours did not come with one: http://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D1H_en.pdf). That page says that 'Cd' means that there are 0 images remaining on the card. So, as @hapien said, it's like the camera thinks the card is too small. If you've freshly formatted the card, you should have space. I've had 2 D1h cameras, and had no trouble with 2gb card (SanDisk Extreme III).
You might try a factory reset on the camera (something I saw suggested in blogs). According to Nikon (https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/ni/NI_article?articleNo=000003758&configured=1&lang=en_US) the 'two-button' combination for the D1 series is Func + Thumbnail (the black-and-white-grid button).
I'm also with @glen_h in thinking a contact is not working. If a pin is not bent in the camera that works/worked (something to check in the other if it even turns on), then maybe they are dirty? (I'm assuming its not the card contacts since they work in other cameras.)

<p>@<a href="/photodb/user?user_id=6484196">john trippier</a>:<br /> This link at KEH (<a href="https://www.keh.com/292419/mamiya-645-power-drive-n-super">https://www.keh.com/292419/mamiya-645-power-drive-n-super</a>) has a description which indicates that this power drive for the Super may indeed have a cable release socket. However, it is clearly not in the same place as the WG401 (in the center of the shutter button). Since there is only one picture, it may be on a hidden surface.<br /><br />However, after looking around some more, I cannot find independent visual or descriptive confirmation.</p>

<p>I know this is an old post, but since no one responded to the last question, and since I was looking it up anyway, I thought I'd share my findings.<br /><br /> The LG401 (which includes the RA401) was designed for the Pro. To use LG401 with a Pro TL, you will need to use a RA402 instead of the RA401.<br /><a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/34707-REG/Mamiya_211_428_Terminal_Adapter_RA401_for.html">http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/34707-REG/Mamiya_211_428_Terminal_Adapter_RA401_for.html</a><br /><br /> The LG402 (which includes the RA402) was designed for the Pro TL. To use LG402 with a Pro, you may use the LG402 (backward compatible.)<br /><a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/139791-REG/Mamiya_211_112_Left_Hand_Grip_GL402.html">http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/139791-REG/Mamiya_211_112_Left_Hand_Grip_GL402.html</a><br>
The Notes of the product descriptions at the links above provided the needed clues.</p>
D700 in DX Mode - question

Apologies to all with the helpful tips -- I had not been on here in many months.
@bgelfand I just checked, and my Auto DX Crop was On, but ...
@ShunCheung ...my a6 (AF Point Illumination) was indeed On. It's Off now, and the shading is back; Thanks all for the feedback.
