  1. No special effects. This is a straight positive, coming directly with no manipulations (except minor contrast adjustment) from the negative (which used a hand-coated emulsion and a non-standard lens). I think I like the extreme "murkiness", but I'm still trying to decide.
  2. It's surprisingly easy. Just expose and develop normally (slight overexposure helps), but without fixing. Bleach with potassium dichromate/sulfuric acid bath to remove the exposed silver (the image will disappear); then blast it with light to completely expose the remaining silver halide, redevelop and fix. Quick search on the web will find descriptions of the process.

The proof is in the pudding - what it looks like. And if it looks "fakey" then that is bad enough.

But as it turns out there's nothing fake about it -- It was made with hand-coated paper, and those are the brush strokes where the sensitizer was laid down. Nothing was done to the picture but reversal and slight brightness/contrast adjustments.

  3. Better signal/noise on your individual images would help a lot. It's difficult to get the color right on both the bright galaxy and the dim sky. Try raising the floor on your V image, so the sky is almost black, before merging them.
