My starter kit would be a flash, a 27" beauty dish, connected to your camera with a 10 feet PC cord. Could be less $250 to start out with.
Another flash with a big softbox would be a good plus, and a third light as back light later on.

Hi
the only recorder that would be able to record 4K for the Sony A7S is the Atomos Shogun (around $1800). You need to get an additional hard drive.
It's pricy but you can also use it as a monitor! A monitor is essential for 4k video.
For the desktop, the Sony doesn't record raw so it doesn't have to be a top of the line desktop. Any desktop with 16GB RAM, i7 CPU and a Nvidia card (at least 2GB RAM for the video card) is good.

If you shoot mainly sports for your school, get the 1D.
However, if you are also invited to shoot general events (Fairs, parties, conference, portraits), get the 5Dmk3

Hi
On a related note, what are the addresses to have large format prints in montreal? more than 36 inches

I would rent get the 50mm f1.8 and would also rent a 2nd camera Nikon D5300 + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8.
The second camera would work as a back-up and for wide/normal shots.

Can't recommend because I'm mostly using flashes. However, if I have one advice, don't get cheap continuous lights from China. I've seen packages advertised on eBay. I saw one really cheap (2 softboxes, 2 umbrellas + stands and lights), at $200 couldn't resist but it was a complete waste of time. It gave a green cast on models.
See <a href=" picture, the model's hands are green-ish and make her look sick.

Hi
I have seen several friends and teams using Kickstarter, a couple of very inspiring cases (more than $800k)
We got involved in several crowdfunding campaigns but it didn't work out (barely got 1% of what we asked). There's a lot of work involved, before the campaign, at launch and during that you shouldn't underestimate.
Now I would only do a crowdfunding campaign if I have a very solid social media base (at least 600 fans on Facebook), and really make sure that the project you have is really inspiring and unique.

I would have said yes but would have proposed to spend 40% less time and 40% less photos. And offer them the option to pay more if they want more photos, if the first test was good

For weddings, I would use the Canon 5D mk3 with Sigma 35mm f1.4 , coupled with another body that has the 85mm f1.8 or 100mm macro.

I don't think it's even possible to mount the SIgma on a full-frame body? It will possibly damage your mirror.
One of my friend tried to insert a crop lens on my full-frame and I nearly lost the camera

If you mainly shoot sports at high ISO, I would get the 70D. You will have less reach with the 5D. The 70D is a much newer camera and behaves very well at high ISO + higher fps + better colors. It also takes great 1080p videos.

How do people get news in your area? What about ad space in a local newspaper?

He still has a lot of Nikon bodies and lenses http://scottkelby.com/gear/ not a complete switch

Hi Rafal - if you shoot outdoors or if you have a very large studio, the 85mm is better. You will have better subject/background separation
those shots were all at 135mm http://500px.com/ElenaShumilova

Can you try using a tripod instead?
I'd say it's the placement of the camera on the bean bag

To "Upgrade the photographer", I found what worked best was committing to a large project with the goal of exhibiting when done. It puts social pressure and gets your mind out of gear shopping.
Workshops and books are like gear, there are dozens if not hundreds about them online and you can collect them as badges but until you actually do a real-world project, they're not really worth the price asked imho.

I'd get the 16-35mm - hard to miss a group portrait with this one.
If you're looking for ultimate image quality, I'd look at either the Zeiss 21mm or Zeiss 15mm

Rowan, you should try loading the website after clearing out the cache. I think it loads fast on your side because the css, html and images are already on your browser cache.

I think if there's an intent of self-expression and not just documentation, then the photographer shouldn't be worried about callign it art

Hi
Yes, it's possible. I would use Nikon D610 + 50mm f1.8 + monopod as a mobile camera, and D7000 + 17-35 2.8 + tripod, plus of course bring the other lenses.
On top of buying a monopod and tripod, you also need a budget for audio, as the on-board microphone mic is amateurish at best. A good starting point is a Zoom recorder, with a Sennheiser shotgun.
It would good to get a slider as well (depending on your pricing)
The mobile camera would get details, faces, emotions. The fixed camera on the tripod would get environmental shots, groups, as well as the whole ceromony.
I would get a junior assistant because of the run time limit factor, and also to operate the audio equipment (shotgun)
Good luck!

photo studio basic kit?
in Lighting Equipment
Posted

Hi
We're in the process of renting our photo studio. We're in good old Montreal, Canada, and it's primarily aimed at amateurs and semi-pro photographers. Sometimes students as well.
At the beginning, we didn't offer flash heads / lights but it looks like every photographer needs lights.
Here's what we are adding :
- one 400W studio strobe light with 80 x 140cm softbox
- one 400W studio strobe light with 22" beauty dish with honey comb
The strobes are optically triggered so that means anyone with a flash on their camera could use the setup.
What do you think of this as a basic kit? If you rent a small photo studio, what would you expect, as a minimum? We are discussing if we need a third light as a hair / back light or different applications. What about reflectors or blockers?
Thanks for ideas,
