1.
Wanted to get feedback on other experiences with mounting canon glass on the Sony A7r.
So far I've tried 3 different metabones IV adapters for my Canon EF 24-70 II, center is very sharp with good contrast, but the edges and corners are terrible, just fall apart at all focal lengths, even at f/8. The Sony FE 24-70 is better than the Canon lens at this point.
Everything I've read online says that canon glass is excellent on this camera.

So what gives?
Try another metabones?

  2.
If there is any way to turn off the lab lights, I will do that.
Can you describe specifically how you would go about holding foamcore above the shooting set? What clamps and arms and stands you would use? I currently have stands to hold the lights, but I need to be able to get a light over the set with a diffuser, and possibly a light block above that. How would you go about rigging this, boom arm on a light stand? Can you please provide specific gear?

  3.
I have a xrite passport and will make a custom profile under the lighting conditions I am shooting under. Will also do a custom white balance.
Any suggestions on a solid portable lighting kit for shooting still life subjects like this? Since I'm new to lighting I need some guidance with what I need to pick up without going overboard with too large light stands/reflectors, overkill on size and weight. I want to have some option on having one of the LED panels overhead, whats the best way to do that? Boom arm? Some other type of light stand extension? What kind of clamps will be useful for rigging in the field.

  4.
I have a rare opportunity to photograph some of the birds from Audubon's personal bird collection in about 5 weeks. Most of my photography is in natural light, but this shoot will be in a lab setting with no windows. I will be transporting this lighting setup to the lab at a college museum to make these photographs, so I have to keep things as simple as possible. I've decided to go with LED panels for this work, I will be working with small bird subjects, so don't need a lot of power. Plus I can visualize light modeling much better with a constant light source. Heat is an issue working with these fragile 19th century specimens, so the LED panels are good in that respect. I spoke with Kirk Tuck the other day and went with his recommendation of a couple inexpensive photodiox panels, and will modify ambient lighting with an overhead diffuser, and reflectors. The photodiox panels can match temps from 3200 to 5600, so I can match fluorescent lab lights if need be.
My main investment will be in light stands, and grip hardware for holding diffusers/reflectors. Any recommendations on what would be a good minimum portable setup to handle type of shoot? Which stands and grip hardware? I need to keep this as inexpensive as possible but don't want to buy junk. I was looking at the manfrotto light stands, but need something to hold a diffuser and possibly one of the LED panels overhead. Am I looking for a boom arm, or something else?
5.
$100 I can do -- $255 -- I didn't pay that for my entire LF camera/Lens!
Just getting into LF, and thought the instant film would be a good way to get feedback on what I'm doing (wrong) with the camera. Maybe not!
If Fuji sells the film, why the frig don't they still sell the holders?

  6.
Anyone know a source for a Fuji PA-145 instant film holder? It is the holder that accommodates the smaller 3.25"x4.25" film on a 4x5 camera. I believe the Polaroid 405 holder will work as well. Any thoughts? It's like they have disappeared from the face of the earth.

  7.
I'm looking to get feedback from a number of sources, and equally as important, have my work exposed to people who are in a position to further my work via a gallery show or book publication. So a one on one review wouldn't be as productive for my goals. If anyone has direct experience with the powerhouse review, I would be interested in hearing more about it.

  8.
I'm looking for suggestions of places that do high quality portfolio reviews, where you can have your portfolio seen by many professionals in the photography field in a 2-3 day review session. I know there is review santa fe, and photolucida, both are supposed to be a very good, quality reviews where your work can be seen by many pros. Anything closer to new york or new england recommended?

  9. I had a S400 canon, nice little camera until is started getting the E18 error,

which indicates problems related to lens extension/retraction. The canon repair

fee of $150 if you were out of warranty (mine was just over 1 year old) turned

my S400 into a disposable camera.

I'm considering a new point and shoot, anyone aware if the canons are still

getting the dreaded E18 error on the newer cameras, like the SD700IS, SD800IS,

SD1000, or have they fixed this problem?

  10. I've got some photographs of the high peaks area of the adks here.

Lots of great hiking in this area, will keep you busy for many years.

  11. Give yourself some extra time and make the trip to Tikal overland, and spend some time in San Ignacio as well. Or at the very least spend at least one night in Tikal. I've been to Tikal twice, both times overland from Belize, the bus service between the Belize border and Tikal make it an easy trip. A fly in and fly out same day trip is definitley to rushed for Tikal.

I've rented cars and driven the roads to San Ignacio from Belize city, and the roads are fine, that is a good alt to taking buses. In fact we continued on to the other less known Mayan ruin Caracol with our suzuki sidekick, it was a great adventure driving the back roads bordering Guatemala and Belize. There is a fantastic cave with a river flowing through it that must be seen to be believed on the way to Caracol. Also you can check out locally organized trips to tikal, from san ignacio and Belize City. Best advice, don't be in a rush, enjoy the pace of Belize.

  12. Looking for recommendations on a small laptop to use on the road for file

reviewing, web design, perhaps a little photoshop work, but the emphasis is on

    small and light and cheap.

My current favorite is the Dell 640M/E1405 for size, weight and price, about

    $750 w/widescreen 1440x900 res truelife.

This isnt supposed to be a photoshop laptop, but a portable machine that

allows review, archiving onto cd, and webdesign work.

Any other contenders out there that are worth a look @ about 5-6 pounds?

  13. Thanks, your right, I dont need to worry about image orientation, the automate fit image action will take care of that.

Any thoughts on how to erase channels while running an action, I tried deleteing them in the action, but just get a warning that that channel doesnt exist (which is the case with many of my images, its the minority that have channels added for editing purposes), and it kills the action.

  14. I have several thousand images I want to process into wallpaper images of

    different sizes, 800 x 600, 1024x768, 1280 x 1024 and 1600 x 1200. I can write

a series of actions to do this no problem and run them as batchs, but the

problem comes up when the image is vertical vs horizonal. Is there any way to

tell photoshop not to process the verticals, since I would have a seperate

    action for verticals?

Another issue, I have all files currently saved as psd files, and in many of

those files I have added channels for editing purposes. Any ideas on how to

clear out the channels using an action? Currently it stops the action when it

hits those files because it can't save them as a jpg because of the extra

    channels.

  15. I havent seen any dead neutral prints from these services yet, but I generally tone my images somewhat, so its not as critical for me. Shutterfly was pretty close, as was mypublisher, Sharedink is generally quite good, but inconsistent between printings. They just can't nail dead neutral with this current print on demand offset technology.

Viovio uses xerox iGen 3 printers, which I believe is not an offset press, but uses what they call Smartpress dry inks, which I guess is some type of toner. If anyone knows more about these printers I would like to hear about it. I'm going to test VioVio out to see how their colors and B&W holds up.

  16. I've tried both Shutterfly and Mypublisher, both were OK, with Mypublisher having a better looking soft cover book, printing quality about the same, which wasnt stellar. My understanding is they both use the HP 3000 Iris offset printer. One of the keys is properly sharpening your images for offset printing. The shutterfly soft cover binding quality was fairly poor, while the mypublisher book was better quality and looked better. The catch on both is there branding on the front cover w/mypublisher, and inside with shutterfly. Not really suitable for resale. Pricing is similar to the viovio mentioned above, which I may try next if there branding is more subtle than shutterfly and mypublisher. So far nothing is as good as the quality I get from sharedink, but then I havent tried any of the hard cover options at either place.
