Thanks. I don't think Canon is as strict about it as Nikon and I could always just bring it back to Japan. That's what my buddy does with his Nikons.

a Canon camera I purchased in Japan?

 

I live in the US, but I'm in Japan right now and looking at a used 5D Mark IV at Bic Camera in Nagoya. My Nikon buddy says Nikon won't repair any Nikons he buys here, but my quick search of the Internet indicates Canon USA might. Does anyone know for sure how that works?

Thanks, Ben. We have a Simply Mac nearby and I phoned them about a larger hard drive. They said "No way." Bummer.

 

If you're interested, this thread on MacRumor has some information on using regular SSDs with an adapter. I may go that route.

Thanks, Ben. I talked to Simply Mac on the phone and they said "no dice." Not sure why Apple makes it so difficult. Perhaps I'll pay them a visit in person. I wasn't aware of GSX until you mentioned, but they wouldn't let me sign in anyway. Not sure what AASP is, though.

 

By the way, I purchased and installed a 1TB Aura Pro X SSD from OWC (MacSales) and then removed it a day later and sent it back for a refund. It was much, much slower than the Apple drive and ran much warmer too. My Apple SSD gives me 1700 MB/sec reads while the Aura Pro X only gave about 1000 MB/sec, even though OWC advertises up to 1300 MB/sec. The deck of my MacBook Pro was also uncomfortably warm. Too bad, because I've had good luck with other OWC SSDs that I've installed in other people's computers before I became a Mac user myself.

Thanks, Andrew. I know you're a MacBook Pro user and I assume you connect (or would connect) that NEC PA272 to your MBP. Is there a noticeable difference in visible resolution between the external monitor and the retina display? After all, the NEC has less than half the pixels per inch of the retina display. Cheers.

I'm curious why you guys are discussing HD monitors. Shouldn't a new monitor for photo editing be 4k?

Anybody have the gouge on replacing the 512 GB SSD in a 2015 MacBook Pro with a 1 TB SSD? Apple and Simply Mac won't sell me the larger drive and the new Aura Pro X from OWC isn't as fast as the current Apple drive. Are there other options or is there somewhere to buy a real Apple 1 TB SSD for this machine?

I put High Sierra on my parent's 2009 iMacs and the older version of Office they were using made the iMacs go "tilt." Not compatible.

The latest update to Lightroom fixed it. All is well now.

I have noticed, however, that if you store your presets with the catalog, Nik won't work. You have to store your presets where Lightroom normally stores presets.

Never mind. Not fixed. I had everything sorted nicely, but the next time I started Lightroom everything was all messed up again. Weird. Must be a bug.

No problem here with Nik on High Sierra, as far as I know. I have it, but I don't use it. I should probably give it a try since everybody loves it so.

Update: It took awhile, but I discovered a solution. Just create a new preset or template (watermark, copyright, file naming template, whatever) and Lightroom will sort the list correctly when you save it and all is well. You can go back and delete the new one if you like too.

How about suggestions for a 4k monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro for photo work? I'm just starting my homework and the Dell U2718Q seems like a good deal for the price and the upcoming BenQ SW271 seems pretty nice, although considerably more expensive. Any comments or other monitors to consider?

 

And here's a basic question: Will text on documents and emails and so on be too small on a 27 inch monitor at 4k or does the Mac have a way to increase text size while keeping photographs sharp? (I suspect it does.) How well does it work? Can you get non-photo work done on the monitor?

PS Almost forgot, this being PhotoNet, somebody will observe that "too small" is subjective, but the rest of you will know exactly what I mean. Let me clarify it to "too small for 61-year-old eyes."

Not a big deal. Everything works; it just looks kinda goofy. There have been other problems with High Sierra too, though. For example, Apple Mail and Yahoo, but that's fixed now. I assume Lightroom for Mac will get fixed too.

Hey Guys,

 

I just transitioned from PC to Mac and Lightroom is doing weird stuff on my new Mac. It seems to have forgotten the alphabet and how to count. That is, the menus in some dropdown boxes are all mixed up. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'll attach a couple of screen shots to show you what I mean. On my PC, everything was in alphabetical and numerical order.
