1.
Marc - you hit the nail on the head! I have already come to the conclusion of 2 separate websites, I don't want to be seen of a 'jack of all trades'.

Very inspiring words here :), and I am definitely taking the advice upon the 'current fashions statements I don't want my photos to die a short lived - knowing that helps me to take a step forward in my style, knowing which route I want to take and which ones I don't.
Lindsay - I learnt the basics of photography in college and much more in-depth technically and theoretically in University...I don't have a problem with using any tools available to me, it's just finding the right balance in my post-production work that I am happy with.

I'm going to go off an test on a previous wedding and have a gander. :)

 2.
I am happy I have raised a thread that other people will benefit from.
I know what you guys mean about film photography, I have my own Darkroom kit stashed away in the attic until I have bigger rooms to play with. Black and white film photography is divine! It made us think more about what we shot. We now have the ability to shoot unlimited photos which doesn't simplify the job in hand really, just means less room for errors.
I think personally if I could define my own style and be happy with it I'd be more confident in myself and my work. With the creative block at the moment actually looking at the photo and saying "yep I am happy with that :) lets export..." I don't I keep moving onto the next saying to myself "no it isn't finished yet, I will come back later" which is bloody sending me crazy lol!

The next client wants Vintage look photos, I have a filter for these but surely I can't put a vintage filter over all of the photos? unless thats what she wants (I will ask her).

 3.
William you certainly do say it how it is, and I respect that, your are right where weddings are concerned it's a craft...I have to get that into my head! I feel silly for not asking how many Black and White photos the customer would like, When I meet up with them next I will make sure to ask what hey are expecting. I run everything through Lightroom, flag all the photos then go back to edit, but this is where I get stumped and lost in the abyss! I will read over again later when I get back from work, it's alot to take in all a once.
thanks guys x

 4.
Wow some strong reading from you guys here! I have ready what you all have to say an have taken it in, you are right weddings are my bread and butter (well intending to be anyway). My true passion is advertising and editorial but it isn't a straight path thus why I have 2 portfolios.

I worry about post production, I really don't doing to much to a photo. I'm always asking what percentage should I have of Black and White etc. I definitely have a creative roadblock at the moment Wouter lol! Being creative is what makes me the person I am, without it I'm like a book without words.

You guys are are so helpful, it wont be forgotten.

 5.
Ok, so I graduated with a degree in photography after 5 years and wanted to get dug into wedding photography. I have assisted and I have a wedding of my own in september, I accumulated 2 cameras, and some expensive L lenses and studio kit. I am great getting the photos but I have an awful issue of the post processing...I cannot define a style with consistency or decide that the photo is finalised. Has anybody else come across this? After all these years I am at my wits end...I feel like I am a failure, I don't know what to do...it's like my confidence is shattered for some reason...I've been in tears for the past 2 weeks as It's getting to me now.
I don't know whats wrong with me, I put everything into photography, it's almost as i am scared of something but at the same time I can't finish a photo that I can say I am happy with that...im lost.

Sorry if I don't make sense...I am after some help please.

 6.
Sorry for the slow response, swapping internet providers meant a blip in internet!

Thanks for the advice, I'm still pondering at what is best, would taking a 400W Bowens and a travel pak be of any use do you think? maybe protecting it with a waterproof poncho for those moments of unexpected downpour? I thought the 400w Bowens as it is smaller in size and lighter. It's would give me the power I need and be able to use it nicely in a studio set up.

Was thinking 4 speedlites and a Octagon umbrella box but that road still seems unstable to me.
thanks guys!

 7.
I have the trolly that comes with the kit yes, I never said I would use speedlites in a studio environment, hence keeping the Bowen's kit. I'm talking about weddings and lighting that my assistant would direct - the Bowen's are to big for this.

I don't have a good budget unless I sell the Bowen's kit and even then I'd struggle to get 2 strobes for studio use and outdoor use (with a battery), it's to pricey with the battery.

thanks for your respones

 8.
Hi, thank you for the replies, I think I have come to a decision that I will keep the Bowen's kit and invest in some Speedlites - recommendation for these speedlites? Canons, Nikons? I have a 430EX at the moment and I did notice it lacked power so new one is needed.

Also I am looking at exchanging my Bowens Classic 500w heads for some 400W heads, they are the new ones - Black and been used 6 times. I'd want £150 cash my way also. Only reason for this is on moving about in peoples homes it's easier to sacrifice 100w and have lighter kit to work with. Do people think this is a good idea or not?

Thanks again

Tammy

 9.
It's between the Alien Bee's and Speedlites as funds are an issue. What Softboxes would work with the Alien Bee's? There on makes are pretty expensive...I own a complete kit with the Bowens 500 Classic at the moment which I am looking at selling for £600 - is this to low? I need it for studio use but on location (possibly one light most the time) for weddings.

I have a headache now :(...

 10.
Hi, I currently have the Bowens 500 classic twin head kit, I bought this for use in both outdoor and studio but looking at it now I think I need something lighter and posibly weather sealent? I don't have alot of money after the sale of my kit (only been used 6 times) I am not sure how much I should sell that for - any ideas?

The Elinchrom range are the ones I would love to go for but like I say, my budget is limited :(, I heard someone mention they used their calumet genius battery pack to power one of these? I'm not sure how true that is. I hope to use the light/lights for studio and outdoor purposes such as weddings (with one light). The other option was speedlights.

Your advice is much appreciated.

regards

 11.
I'm not really at the start of my career as such, I have a Degree in photography which taken 6 years to get and that was intense! it's just the beginning of my Wedding photography which I do consider it the beginning and I have a separate website (which will be linked to the Wedding site), but this stops the confusion of the jack of all trades look. It helps to point people to the right place without a fight to get there.

It's quite exciting to get on this path but I think the SWPP is definitely something I'm going to look at to help do this smoothly.
You guys are full of knowledge! thank you for taking the time to respond so in-depth, it's greatly appreciated!

 12.
He said yes he said I could use them! No restrictions either! Fab chap! Thank you for your advice, I guess I was afraid of a no as without examples people are not interested and the weddings I had done were with the old lens which had a focusing problem ( I now have lots of backups).

I have a wedding of my own in November, I'm hoping she will be ok for me to use them on my site too, I will put this in a contract with a tickable box. Thank you guys, you always seem to help. I was starting to accept that the no may be on the agenda and that I would have to accept I couldn't use them in a portfolio of work.

What do you think of the SWPP? I was pointed in that direction.

 13.
Thank you Lindsey I have bookmarked it and it will sure to be used, I gave him the CF card on the first wedding we did and he returned it with the images on...which I was confused about. Tbh I consider naming someone on a website as a link, Google is in the top right corner on most peoples computers/tablets, it's not hard to find someone in a few seconds lol.

I will let you know what the response is, fingers crossed.

 14.
Sorry for the slow reply.

I'm going to ask him this afternoon :S... I do like your approach to this but one thing I'm reluclent to do is to link him on my site, I'm obviously going to put I did them while assisting but I don't want to link to his site, he does his service at a stupidly cheap price to "get the job" he says.

You are right about needing samples of work, most of these photos were taken on my instruction, the bridal prep mainly as he was taking photos of the groom getting ready, I set up a fair few shots myself, moved things around engaged with the bridal party, I have never considered using any of the 'main' shots after the ceremony as that just taking the micky.

"The worst case is he says “no”. In which case you say: “thank you for your time” – and say NOTHING else" WW

So if he says no I'm to leave it and use some of the work I have done at a wedding I did do? I'm also trying to set up staged shots but I'm having a hard time finding the recently married couples.

I'm just so afraid of people not liking there photos, but that's how I feel about most things - I'm sure many of you guys can relate.

Thank you for your replies and advice, it really does help me.

 15.
It's just some of the conversations we have had, he doesn't give off a positive approach to me using the photos. What I wanted to know was if I actually need to ask, I am going to ask but I wanted to know my rights before, I don't want to be put in a position that I don't know what I am talking about.

Thank you for responding William.

 16.
Hi, I have been around these forums for some time but with the new Google caching I have made another account, not because I'm hiding something but because I don't want everything about me Googled, so hard to not have everything we do achieved into a single search these days.

Anyway here is my question;
While studying photography in University I became an assistant to a local photographer, he himself had only just discovered photography and started to offer weddings. He paid me and I invoiced him - I never received, read or signed any contract. I am finally starting out my wedding photography on my own, (slowly but surely). I wanted to know if I am ok to use the photographs I have taken or if there is any legal issues he could use against me? I wanted to ask him but I am pretty sure he will say no, I wanted to know my rights first.

If you could kindly lead me in the right direction I would extremely be grateful :).

Regards

Tammy
