Well done K A and a quite a list of hardware used to get the shot. You note 1/1000s shutter speed is this a typo or are you using some form of high speed sync (sorry not familiar) with Nikon-Speak? Heck of a rig to support four flash units. Are these all attached to the camera or set up off camera? Tech notes list f/45 as the aperture, as I recall Nikon puts effective aperture in the metadata, correct? If so what was the physical setting on the lens, f/22? Sorry for all the questions but curious macro photographers want to know ;-) Once again fine work.

Excellent image Rod, even the lowly, pesky fly can make for a pleasing photograph. Exposure is spot on and background quite pleasing.

Thank you Frederick for the kind comments. Sorry for the late response but I didn't get notification of your post. The night before this was shot we had very heavy thunder storms. I believe this critter was caught out in the storm and hunkered down on the flower for the evening. I'm suspect it was plum tuckered out. Almost certain it was asleep when this was shot, hence the tight wings and curled abdomen, as it didn't move when my flash fired. I have several images of it in various stages of waking up. Eventually when the sun crested the tree line and the bee soaked up some heat, it stirred and took flight. At first it landed on my diffuser and I observed it very closely, abdomen contracting and expanding with each breath. Absolutely fascinating to watch. After a few minutes on the diffuser it flew off into the distance.
I have found if one goes early in the morning, plops down near a flower patch, one will often find bees and wasps that hunker down for the evening. In my neck of the woods early spring and early fall, when evening temperatures fall in the ~50's and daytime temperatures are in the mid to high 80's, is most advantageous for this occurrence.

Thank you Pierre Dumas. Indeed it is a real macro, some might consider it a micrograph.
