Yes, pull the film advance lever out to turn meter on--push it in to turn it off.

Thanks. I had it overhauled and CLA'd by Sherry Krauter in April. This started happening
as early as June, but I haven't got around to checking into it until now--of course, she's
not responsible for that. Anyone know how long she guarantees her work?

Using a Leica CL, several frames per roll exhibit this dark band at the top (for landscape
orientation). It does not seem to be associated with particular shutter speeds. What could
be the problem?

Kodak Retinas are certainly compact and have GREAT, moderately fast lenses (f/2), but any
of the small 'c' cameras have squinty viewfinders FWIW. I too use and like the Leica CL
with 40 Summicron.

Have you read the introduction to "Guide"? I thought Szarkowski's words on Eggelston's work were thought provoking. Another good source on Eggleston and many others like him is "Walker Evans & Company."
To answer your question, when I look at his pics, I feel something I can't always identify. Often, it is something like familiarity or nostalgia over something just out of my mind's reach--maybe something I've long forgotten.
His pics show me a sense of possibility--bits of life that hint at longer narratives the viewer can create based on his/her experiences in life.
It's tough to talk/write about any good art. If it weren't, then I'm not sure I would understand the point of different mediums?
That said, I'd still like to hear from some more people on Eggleston.

Another vote for the Toyo. It's very comfortable to use, and I doubt a more expensive loupe would make a difference in output. Rubber ends are nice (for GG and glasses wearers); length is good (you don't have to get too close to the GG); and good relief/wide view (easy to look through).

Thanks all for the answers--they've been very helpful.

Looking to get into LF. Primary draw to LF is movements for exterior architecture
in NYC. Want something that will correct converging verticals from across a city
street. What movements (and to what extent) does one need to do this? Also, how
wide a lens is recommended for this? Can I get by with a Shen Hao or comparable
field camera (I don't have a car and don't look forward to lugging a monorail around)?

I recently bought a Kodak Retina IIc from a local dealer in NYC. The slow speeds were
off, but they offered to fix this if I bought it. Before they serviced the shutter it made
a very quiet 'chck'. When I got the camera back, speeds were on, but the shutter now
makes a metallic 'clank'. At the time, I thought it sounded louder, but wasn't sure.
Since, I have listened to several Retina IIc's and it's clear that mine should be quieter.
Anyone know why this happened and whether or not it can be repaired? Also, I'd like
to have the rangefinder cleaned. Mark Hama offered to do it for $68. Does this
sound reasonable? Is there anyone in NYC who could do as well/better (quality and
pricewise)? Thanks.
