Thanks, Jill. You have a really lovely portfolio, so I'm sure than once you do take a photo of a zebra it will be a stunner

So beautiful, excellent use of second curtain flash, the light, the colours and the sense of motion are amazing. You're a brilliant photographer

Thank you for your comments and suggestions :) I agree I should have used a reflector board ... or get one. Plus I really do need to develop Photoshop skills since you're right the dot of light under her eye is slightly distracting

Okay, first, I don't pretend to be the greatest photographer on this site, I'm just an amateur but I can give a few pointers. Second, let's look at works in the photograph before pointing out some flaws. The B&W works, especially as the white of the buds of the right of the frame complements the larger flowers, giving the image a kind of grace and purity. The light is good, falling from the top right hand side of the frame and the focal length; I'm guessing a f-stop of 5.6 or less (I think less which means you have nicer camera than me)  is a good choice. The result is soft, delicate light. It's a decent photo. What could make it better? In the top left hand corner there's something or another that distracts from the central image. Also it looks metallic, which kind of breaks the soft, natural look of the rest of the image. Another problem is no definite point for the eye to fall on and rest. Of the two flowers in roughly the centre of the picture, the uppermost is the most in focus, but it's also a tad too bright, the one below it is half hidden. They seem to jostle for attention. Maybe what you'd want is a bit of a flow or movement. You can arrange the flowers or take one or two out before you take the shot, maybe have them bend in a more over diagonal line, sort of falling in line from the top right edge of the frame to the bottom left edge of the frame. If possible, maybe extend  the shadow of flowers to serve as a kind of a segue. Anyway, hope you find my advice useful, and that I've managed to articulate myself in a sensible fashion and you don't just think I'm some kind of jerk.

  1. Comments welcome. This is an instagram photo taken on my

cellphone. In case it's not readily apparent what's happening in the

frame. My friend is staring at a framed photo of Johannesburg with

his shadow reflection on the right of the frame.

Thank you, all; particularly as you all boast wonderful portfolios. Guiseppe, as I and many others can't help but commenting, you are genius.
