I use a 100-400mm lens hood for this lens which was cut with a dremel tool in to a "petal" shape to give maximum protection with the 10D's digital crop. It now actually provides some front element shading, unlike the original hood which is nothing but a big waste of plastic.
24mm 1.4L lens's hood also fits nicely, and provides a LITTLE better shading, and is much less bulkier.

Maybe if you cleaned it and used it with an eye cup it would work better? It is a clear piece of glass, there should be no noticible contrast difference with it on or off.
Almost every SLR camera ever made on the planet earth has an eyepiece on it, mostly for previously stated reasons.

OK, I've spent 30 min looking for an appropriate flash frensel lens on the web. None to be found. All of them have about a 30cm focal length. I want something with about a 15cm or 6 in focal length. Otherwise you have to stick the frensel lens so far away from the flash it becomes unwieldly. So where do you buy these from. I checked edmund scientific, but they want $30 for a lens that is 4x6 inches.
This site has a full page magnifier for under $2 but does not have focal length info.

Pick up some black dark green and amber spray paint for about $12 at the hardware store. Looks better than those stupid neopreeen covers and fellow nature photographers will think you are wierd.

Anyone ever see the 800mm ED lens I think the aperture is f/6.7? Anyone actually ever use it?

Owner said it's made of regular glass and it lacks a helicoid for focusing. Wierd.

Yes 1/30 is too slow unless you are in a studio and the lighting is low. Dogs move around too much.

I really agree getting a used beat up lens that has good glass is the way to go. Why not try to get the discontinued 500mm f/4.5 lens? If you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it?

One can add about a 2mm spacer to the OLD Canon 2x converter and you can then use it stacked with a 1.4x converter. It will still focus to infinity and you will not lose any electrical connections.
You will also have to add a modified baffle. The 2mm thick spacer goes inbetween the exsisting mount and the 2x TC's body. See my picture. If you ask me Canon made the first 2xTC non stackable on purpose. Then they came out with this new one so people would buy more things. They should have made the first one stackable too.

It should be LESS Prone to vibration than primes because it is
heavier. More mass=less vibration. However, primes are almost always
sharper than zooms. Steve, I'd be interested in getting in on a deal
with Delta, let me know.

How about a Quartz/Fluorite 55mm f/4 Ultraviolet lens. That would
rock!

The price difference is wierd, but I'm not complaining if it is cheaper!
A couple of years ago I modified a Mamiya 100-200mm f/5.6 zoom lens
to fit on a Pentax Mount. This modified lens was very heavy to
handhold. I tried using it once at a wedding, that was a mistake. The
lens, camera, bracket and Quantum Q flash weighed a ton.

I finally got a local machinest to make a rotating bracket for the
100-200mm lens , but It is still not a good solution.

So I'm very happy about this new lens. It weighs less than the wide
angle zoom lens so torque rotation should not be a major problem when
it is mounted on a tripod. It also has a very large focusing ring and
an good zoom ring, something my converted Mamiya didn't have (both
focusing and zooming were located at the far end of the lens).
<p>
Hopefully I'll buy this lens and test it out soon. Unfortunately it
takes a large filter size. I wish they could have made it 77mm like
Mamiya's and Fuji's 680 equivalent zoom lenses.

I wouldn't worry about it. Almost all lenses have some dust in them.
It won't effect picture quality unless it is very big or there are a
lot of small pieces of dust

It will flare if you shoot it directly into the sun. Especially if you are using neutral grads or other non multicoated filters. Other than that I like this lens.

Filters are one of those accessories everyone thinks they desparately need, but rarely use.
Put in a search on ebay for 95mm filters and every few months you can get one for less than $50 bucks.
My cheap solution has been to cut gels and tape them to the back of the lens.

While Steve's answer sounds very academic, it is based on theoretical and not actuall comparison of these two lenses. Which in my opinion is basically useless. Who the heck knows what a Cooke Triplet is? And what makes it better than a Gaussian design, or aprochormatic Tesler quadtuplet? Those were sarcastic questions by the way.
The only usefull advice I can give you is to order this lens from Cayman Camera in the Gulf Of Mexico or Hong Kong. CCamera sells it for about $1600.

Don't know what camera you are using, but a little know fact about Mamiya's 6x7 70mm holder is that it has a suction bulb to suck the film flat. Sounds like that would solve your problems.
