Autumn in eastern North Carolina tends to arrive late and lightly.

Beautiful dragonfly, Bill.
It's still quite warm in eastern NC, but already the first signs of fall are creeping in. I'll soon be able to take more tramps by the rivers, streams and swamps without getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Here is a shot taken along a boardwalk through a swamp near the Scuppernong River, showing what falls into - and grows on - the water. From a distance this duckweed may look like scum, but it's a rather pretty little plant up close.

It's been so hot and muggy here in eastern North Carolina, I thought it might be nice to remind myself of the alternative... This was taken after a later winter storm that left everything encased in ice.

I'm loving all the macro shots of critters this week! After what seemed like weeks of rain, it was nice to look up and see some puffy clouds in the sky.

Such glorious shots!
At an outdoor concert yesterday evening a giant bubble got away from the children who were chasing it. An updraft carried it high above the concert stage into the evening sky. I'm surprised it didn't pop sooner, but it allowed me to get a few shots of it.

Gorgeous heron, Don! I went out in search of a sunset, but clouds got in my way,

This past weekend brought the Eastern Carolina Wildlife Art Festival to Little Washington. Along with the paintings and duck decoy carving were the Dock Dog competitions featuring lots of spirited retrievers and their owners. I like the concentration on the faces of both the woman and her dog (this dog actually won, I believe, with a jump of 23 feet!)

This was taken earlier this fall in Paris, where I spent most of the time exploring the city's beautiful gardens, large and small. I loved all the contrasts between the young woman and the older women.
