1. I shot a little bit of press work on film a lot of years ago. It was all 35mm, but I learned quick, fast and in a hurry to have backup plans for when something went wrong - film would jam in the camera and couldn't be fixed in the field, a back would jam open, a lens would have a problem, and so on. Always had lots of fresh film, another lens, one or more extra bodies, etc. If I'd been shooting LF for press work, would have only been able to tote one body, maybe 2 or 3 lenses. LF shutters built onto the lenses were generally reliable, but they were clockwork [like] with springs and tiny moving parts. Not easily repaired in the field. When you use gear from the pool you may be accepting a camera that wasn't treated well or hadn't been repaired properly.

Now the important bit: events don't wait for the press! Having that second shutter might make the difference between f/8 and be there and waiting for the next call out. And waiting. And waiting....

  2.
I would never say that some if not many of Sigma's amazing design decisions seem the result of drunken dart throws. They are apparently aiming at a market that will spring into existence femtoseconds before the product is released. That kind of marketing acumen trumps any technical need or desire on the part of existing camera buyers. I often wish I could align my pocket camera needs with the products that marketing has decided I should want, but usually my peg won't fit the hole.... /..

  3.
I'm still having the same problem -- can't open any pages on photo.net using latest version of FireFox. I've logged in using Chrome browser to post this message, but FF is my normal choice. It contacts the server with a page-load request apparently, but then just sits there spinning until it times out.

Not sure what's causing it, but I can't log in because I never even get that far!

  4.
I'm not sure what's happening here, but any attempt to load photo.net or any page from the site just times out in Firefox 12.0. Tried disabling A*Bl*ck, but same problem.

Anyone had a similar problem or have a suggested solution?
Even a problem solving track would be good, just not sure what's going on here.

Hope this is the appropriate forum.
