1.
If you really mean SLR and not DSLR, the Nikon F 100 is a very good option. The FM2n is also very good, but not AF. I think the F4 is also reasonably priced. All of these cameras can use the AI and AIS lenses that are very well priced and very good build and IQ quality.

 2.
There is a place on the internet called flashzebra that sells all kinds of these adapters. They have a hot shoe on top also. There is a pc cord attached also. The one I bought has 2 female and 1 male socket and has a test button. I believe it was
$ 12. They are made in India and appear to be very well made. I used mine to connect an old Metz flash to my Rolleiflex and it worked fine. The Nikon is probably much more expensive.
Make sure you get one with standard sized pc sockets, not the mini size.

 3.
I have two of the Nikon mirror lenses, the 500mm f/5 and the 500mm f/8. The f/5 is so huge that I almost never use it. I wish that it were a f/5.6 instead. The f/8 lens though is pretty nice. It is the older one that only close focuses to 15 feet. As long as you don't get highlights that show up as donuts, the images are very good. I don't think I would want to buy or carry a 500mm f/8 normal lens.

 4.
In addition to the water, do not eat any salads, fresh vegetables, or ice cubes. Also do not get anything at all from street vendors such as fruit or juices. Make sure all of your equipment is insured. Maybe even put on a generic camera strap and tape up the Nikon name and model. Don't take any escorted tours, especially walking tours with guides who do not have proper credentials.
Lastly, cancel these travel plans and go somewhere safer like Damascus, Syria.
