  1. The bats migrate to Mexico for the winter and roost further north in the southwest during the summer months for mating season. The bat season in TX is generally mid-March to November. You can contact the Bat Conservation International, based in Austin, for emergence times and what-not. They also have interpreters on scene at times.

     

    There is a bat observation center that is a decent spot, but if you can get down on the water you can get the sunset with the bats in the foreground. Visit www.batcon.org for more information. There are other bat sighting locations in the Hill Country area, but they are a bit of a drive. I'd recommend that when you shoot the bats in Austin that you observe them for an evening with no camera (just having a camera tempts one to use it!). Just walk around the bridge, observe the lighting, think of composure, etc. On the second night start taking pictures.
