I think it would be great to have it built into the camera as well. Regarding battery concerns: if you don't want it or aren't using it then you would turn it off. I actually ordered a blueSLR for an upcoming trip http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006FQY9UK/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

It connects to the camera then communicates with your iphone for the GPS data which is then placed in the EXIF. In addition to the geo-tagging it works as a remote shutter release and controls some basic camera functions.

I had previously tried the eye-fi with GPS tagging but found the fact that only JPGs had the info placed in the EXIF and then only after being uploaded to the eye-fi servers to be too cumbersome and not useful to me.

Yeah, I realize I didn't make the distinction clear, but if it's on the mirror why take the chance you'll knock it around where it will get onto the sensor?

On the subject of your travel ... what lenses are you taking? What types of shooting are you anticipating? I'm going to Europe soon. I've got the 18-200 (impulse buy) and the 35mm. I highly recommend the 35mm. I don't see myself carrying the 18-200 much.

Don't. But seriously, don't :-) I generally go by the same rule they tell you for your ears, basically don't stick anything in there. If dust gets on the sensor and causes a problem I would send it to a pro to have it cleaned.

Where did you get yours from? My D5100 refurb came from Adorama and came as good as new. If it is a big problem didn't it come with a 90 day warranty? I'm pretty sure mine did. I've had mine for about 4 months now with no issues except that my wife gets a little jealous of the time I've been spending with the Camera.

I'm going on a similar trip in May (London, Amsterdam, Munich, Venice, Florance,Rome) and have been wrestling with the same question. I settled on purchasing a used 18-200 VR for walking around / day use and a 35mm 1.8 night / everything else. Honestly if it is anything like home the 35 won't come off the camera.

Kit Lens just bad or defective?

Are you sure you don't have the exposure compensation bumped up too high? I don't shoot in auto but if I recall correctly setting it in one mode it may not carry over to another. (eg you have it set correctly in Aperture mode but bumped up in Auto).
Just a thought.
