    Distinguished Fly

          19

Mark, I don't even want to ask where you've been hanging around lately.

Beautiful image and incredible technique, as always.

I'm just relieved you decided to make a macro image of the dung fly and not the dung. Although now that I think about it, you can probably make dung look good, too.

    Congratulations on another winner.

    Rubens.

  1. ...with an image like this is that everyone feels compelled to comment on how beautiful it is.

I, for one, think that this is a forum for people to improve, so I'm going to break with tradition and make some suggestions on how to make this image better:

    1.

    2.

    3.

There! I hope you take it as constructive criticism. ;-)

    Rubens.

  2. If you look carefully, that's me standing next to one of the lights on the shore! I remember that day as if it was just... well, whenever Michael made this image.

Even if you can't recognize me (ps: get some eyeglasses!), the water is too calm for it to be the end of the day.

The image is nice as it stands, but has the potential to become superb with some creative dodging and burning. The bush in the lower right is indistinct, and appears as a blob to my eye, for example. Making it lighter would reveal the texture in the branches.

    Digital Darkroom

Very original and well executed. I particularly like the symbolic detail of using duotone for the "older" chemical darkroom technology as a background and the colour digital print rising up from within this older technology.

    Jeff,

Your composition is very good. The image is well balanced and the colours are vibrant.

I'm not too sure about your models though. This must be their first shoot... they look a little stiff and unaturally posed. Tell them to relax, take it easy and enjoy the sun. There's potential, but the models need to cooperate more.

Also, my wife wants to know how your models got such smooth legs. What's the name of their aesthetician?

  3. The concept is very original! I can see the PS cut & paste of the images quite easily on my screens, though. Try playing with some of the selection tools available in PS and pick the one with most natural coverage, although it might be difficult to do this on the foreground foliage. Use of the feathering option might help.

  4. Overall nice. I would suggest cropping out the dark rocks below the high-tide mark at the bottom. I also find the large cloud on the left somewhat intrusive. If you're not against using PS, I would suggest cloning it out.

    Nice colours.

  5. I congratulate you for picking an exposure that kept the beautiful illumination of the right-side leaves and the top of the Chateau, while not losing detail in the dark bits (top-side leaves and lower row of houses).

In terms of colour, the contrast of orange leaves with blue sky and green roof is superb.

Si vous n'etes pas contre l'usage de PS pour modifier le contenu de la photo, la suggestion et commentaires de Margaret sont tres valides.

  6. My rating on this image is as much for composition, colour and technique as it is for the bravery required to stick a lens in the face of a dude like this one.

Well done, sir. What's next... rattlesnakes and scorpions? :)

Composition is good. The white background makes the stamen stand out in a nice way.

However, I think more diffused lighting would have eliminated the distracting shadows and made it a stronger image.

Well done, randolph! Subject is tack sharp. The out of focus branches in the background and in the lower right corner are distracting enough to prevent this image from being perfect. A very nice image nevertheless.

I like the tone, colour, lighting, composition and expression. I find the red spots on the breast and arms somewhat distracting and would clone/blur them out in PS, if you don't object to that sort of thing.

I'd nevertheless be mighty proud of hanging this image if it was my son! Well done!
