1.
A few days ago I bought new a Canon EF 100/2 lens. I keep a listing with the serial numbers of all my equipment (in case something gets "lost") so I started looking for the serial number of the lens but I can't find it. Of course the lens came in a Canon box and it has a a label with the serial number: (21)05300106 but not the lens. Does somebody have a similar experience with a recently bought lens? Is there a special place of the lens I have to look for ther serial number?
Thanks a lot for your replies and best regards, Gonzalo

  2.
I am going to upgrade my actual LR3 (3.6) to LR5 (5.2). I was watching several tutorials and everything seems to be straightforward. The only exception is the Presets I have in LR3 (development presets, print templates, watermarks, etc.). The presets in LR3 are not stored with the catalog, they are in a different folder. Will LR5 use the same Presets folder as LR3? If not, how can I use my existing LR3 Presets in LR5?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
3.
Alberto,
I use Lightroom which has a great print module. Anyway the important parameters are the same in Lightroom and in Photoshop. So, here are my settings:
Never let the printer manage the color. So, Color Management done by the Software (Lightroom, Photoshop or whatever.
I use the color profile downloaded from the paper manufacturer. Hahnemüle color profiles are accurate. Years ago I ordered a custom made color profile for Hahnemüle Fine Art Baryta but I was not able to see any difference with the downloaded one.
Clicking the Page Setup button you go straight into the printers driver window. In the Quick Setup tab choose Media Type: Photo Paper Pro Platinum (this is the setting recommended by Hahnemüle); Print Quality: High; select paper Size and Paper Source and click On Color/Intensity Manual Adjustment. You can then Save all this settings for future use.
Then you click the Main tab Color/Intensity, select Manual (if it is not already selected) and click on Set.
A new window will open and you click in the Matching tab. Then, in Color Correction, select None.
Accept everything and you are done.
No difference for B&W and I get pure B&W prints.
Hope this helps. Regards, Gonzalo

    I also use a Canon 9500 MkII and Windows 7 64 bit.
My "normal" driver is Ver. 2.28 and the XPS driver is Ver. 5.28. The difference between them is that the normal driver prints at 8 bits per color and the XPS driver prints at 16 bits per color. In theory the 16 bpc driver enables a more smooth gradation printing than the 8 bpc driver. My eyes are not able to perceive any difference between the two. I always use the 8 bpc driver without problems and with very good results.
The papers I use are: HARMAN Gloss FB Al (for color prints), HAHNEMÜLE Fine Art Baryta (neutral Black and White) and HAHNEMÜLE Photo Rag Baryta (for warm Black and White). These are the only papers I have been using for years.
5.
Hello,
I searched in Photo.net but did not find a clear answer for the 1Ds MkII. I use a Lexar 4GB CF Memory Card and it works fine, the same is true for an 8GB SanDisk...BUT, according to the owners book, 80 RAW photos fit, more or less, in a 512MB card which means 640 RAW photos for a 4GB card and 1280 for an 8GB. Both with 4GB and 8GB the maximum number of RAW photos I get is around 433 and that number tells me that the camera is using only 3GB of the CF card. Are these numbers correct or am I missing or doing something wrong?
Thanks a lot for your help. Gonzalo

  6.
I am just after finishing my first "virtual book" connecting poetry with photography. The "virtual book" is a big album with poems in even pages and photos (A4 size) in odd pages. It took me two years to complete and is composed of 20 poems and, of course, 20 B&W photos. I did it the following way:
I read a poetry book (Antologia Rota) by a spanish poet Leon Felipe (begining of the 20th century). Out of the book I selected 20 poems that "touched" me more deeply. With some of them I am able to visualize the photo that matches the poem, so the only problem is to look for it (with one particular photo it took me over a year to find it). For other poems I don`t "see" the photo so I keep the poem in my memory and let time pass along. Sooner or later I will come up with and image that matches the poem.
I print a front page with a photo related to the title of the "book" (in this case Canción Rota or Broken Song). Following the front page I print the poems in a single page of photographic paper and mount it using big acid free mounting corners; all the poems in the even pages. The related photo is printed in B&W in Hahnemuhle Fine Art paper using a Canon pigment ink printer and mounted like the poem page. At the very end I print and Index with the title of each poem and the place were the corresponding picture was taken.
After completiing the "book" I have an album with a front page, 20 poems with photos and an index.
This is how I have done my first poem-photo "book". 20 photos in two years. This is a veeeery slow procedure but I am satisfied with the result
Best regards, Gonzalo

  7.
I have a Canon 9500 MkII that gives me great results. BUT I have a problem with it: some times (no more than once in a year) there are long periods of time (2 or 3 months) in which I am out of home and I can not print. When I come back and I try to print (95% of my prints are B&W) I find 3 or 4 colors not working (nozzels clogged). Nozzel cleaning maintenance function does not solve the problem, specially with Magenta, no way to make it work again. The only and expensive solution is to install a new printing head. This has happened to me twice and the cost of 2 printing heads is two thirds the price of a new printer plus all the ink used unsuccessfully trying to clean the nozzels.
I know there is an obvious solution: send my files to a profesional digital lab which is something I am considering, although good professional labs in Spain are very expensive. But apart from this workaround, is there something I can do to my printer to avoid this problem?

Thanks a lot for your replies and best regards, Gonzalo

  8.
Thanks a lot for your replies:
Al, just type in Google "Canon 24-105/4 Error 01" and you will see what I mean.
Marcus, thankyou for your detailed answer. The fact is that I like heavy bodies (I used medium and large format in my analog days). My first body is a 1D MkII and my second one is a 1D; so, changing bodies is not an option. I like to feel a "brick" in my hands
Brian, I own a wider lens and I do not care too much about USM and IS.
I will go for the Tamrom AND, perhaps, the 85/1.8.
Best regards, Gonzalo

  9.
I would like to know if somebody is using this combination. I already own a Canon 17-35/2.8 L and a Sigma 50/1.4. Now I need something for the upper end; the 24-105/4 was the first option but after reading a lot of horror stories about its problems (and how expensive it was to get it repaired) I decided it was not for me. My second option was the Canon 24-70/2.8 but it is very heavy and if I want to use it with a 1D body I will need extra time at the gim to strengthen my arms. So, after reading a few good reviews I set my eyes on the Tamron 28-75/2.8. It merges nicelly with my Canon 17-35, it is not hevy, not big and price is great. This is the reason wy I would like to know if somebody has already used this glass in a 1D body. I am not a Pro and the main subjects of my photos are architecture, portraits and travel (99% of the first two converted to B&W and printed at home with a Canon 9500 MkII).
Thanks a lot for your answers, Gonzalo

  10.
Hello,
I have a Canon 9500 Mk II and 95% of my prints are B&W, I use LR3. Recently I got a new PC with Windows 7 64 bits. My printer has two drivers: 8 and 16 bits. Up to now I only used the 8 bit driver because the 16 bit was not compatible with my old OS. Now I can work with the 16 bit driver. I know that PS (I also have CS5) works with 16 bits, what about LR? What about the custom made profiles I have for my printer and different papers, are they the same? Is there any advantage using the 16 bits driver when I print from LR3 printing module?
Thanks a lot and best regards from Spain, Gonzalo

  11.
Hello,
A few days ago I got a present from a good friend: a Canon EOS 1D body and three batteries plus charger. I am a Nikon person (but not fanatical), which means that I know nothing about Canon. I downloaded the users manual and spent a few hours reading it and searching and reading in PhotoNet and I think a now know a little bit about this camera. For my hands the handling of the camera is great, the quality looks impresive and it is in almost mint condition. I would not mind to shoot with Nikon and Canon at the same time if the quality of the Canon images deserves it (I can not check myself for I have no lens for it). I think that the 4.5 Mpixels is only a very relative figure and more facts must be considered.
I consider myself an advanced amateur and I own a Nikon D80 (APS-C) and half a dozen lenses lenses (primes and zooms). I shoot mainly old buildings, portraits, jewelry and some landscapes, 90% of my work is B&W, and I do my own printing with a Canon 9500 MkII . If I was to keep the 1D (APS-H, so EF lenses required, correct?) I guess I would need a 24 or 28 and a 50mm prime lenses (that would suit my shooting style). So, considering that I got the 1D for free:
a) Is it worth making the investment in a pair of primes?
b) Is there somebody over here still using this camera?
c) If you answered yes to the previous question, can you tell me something about your experience with it?
Thanks a lot for your help. Best regards from Spain, Gonzalo

  12.
Hello,
I am a user of LR since the first release. Until 2 weeks ago my "old environment" was: Laptop (Windows XP); 1.5 GB of memory; 60 GB of internal disk; 500 GB of external disk; LR3 (3.4.1). LR software and catalog in the internal disk; photos and LR catalog backup in the external disk; photos backup in CDs. The internal disk crashed and I lost all my data. How fortunate I was to have LR catalog (and other data) backup in the external disk.
Now I have a new PC and the "present environment" is the following: Minitower (Windows7 x64); 16 GB of memory; 1 GB of DDR3 in the video card; 2x500GB of internal disk; 500 GB of external disk; LR software and catalog in one of the internal disks; photos and LR backup in the external disk; photos backup in CDs. Everything is now up and running including all the new drivers for Windows7 (scaner, printer, tablet, Spyder ...). The fact is that I do not like this "present environment", I would prefer to have my photos in the second internal disk and photos and LR catalog backups in the external disk. So my question is: How can I safely switch from "present environment" to "preferred environment"?
Thanks a lot for your help and never forget to backup the catalog.
13.
I also have a 9500 MkII for over a year and 95% of my prints are B&W. I used to print from PS CS3 but now I am printing from LR3.3 (no difference for color management). My experience is the following:
Canon users manual or web site are useless for advance printing.
Order a custom made profile for the paper(s) you are using; this is a must; the profiles you can download from the manufacturer(s) website(s) are only an a rough approximation. With a custom made profile you will not have a any color casting.
In your application always select "application manages color".
In the printer driver settings, Quick Setup, select the media type that matches the paper you are using (paper manufacturer(s) normally tells you that)
In the printer driver settings, Main, select Print Quality, High or Custom, Set, 1; in this case the printer will print much slower but I am not able to see any quality improvement.
In the printer driver settings, Main, select Color/Intensity, Manual, Set, select Matching, None. You can save a profile with all this settings.
Now you can send your photo to the printer. Printing 95% of the prints in B&W Grey, PhotoBlack and MatteBlack are heavily used (although I never print in Matte paper) and the rest of inks are evenly used (color inks are also used in B&W even if no toning is applied)
This is the way I print with this printer.
Regards, Gonzalo

  14.
I am sorry to contradict Leigh: in this printer the heads ARE NOT in the cartridges. There is a printing head and ten ink cartridges.
If you did a "deep cleaning" with no results run a "Nozzle Check" (you should have done it before the cleaning). Looking at the paper with the result of the nozzle check look which color is not printing properly (you will see white strikes). Replace that, and only that, ink cartridge.
15.
Following the good advices I got in this forum I recently upgraded from LR2 (2.7) to LR3 (3.3); thank you to all of you. I upgraded the LR2 catalog and them all the photos to Process 2010 (Current), everything went fine. The only problem I have now is that when I open a photo in the development module and I look in Detail and Noise Reduction only Luminance is highlighted; Detail and Contrast are greyed and I can`t use them. Of course Camera Calibration shows Process 2010 (Current). What am I doing wrong? I thought this happened when Process was 2003.
Thanks a lot for your help and a very happy new year to all. Gonzalo
