Is the new 28-105 a replacement for the old one?
I've just visited one of my local camera stores and they've told me they can't get any more of the 28-105 3.5-4.5 (the next shipment will be the newer 4-5.6).
Every camera store I've called or visited is out of stock of the 3.5-4.5 (and also subsequently tells me they aren't going to stock the older model). It seems a bit of a panic has swept through my area and there is no more stock left (and apparently a few people still after them - me included).
Can anybody confirm if the camera store is correct or not? Is the 28-105 being replaced or is this new lens a complement 28-105 for lower end kits?
Eos 28-105 or 50 1.8, Which to add?

The new 28-105 is a USM lens but has a new half-size micro-USM motor in it. The other differences are:

Aperture range: 4-5.6 (was 3.5-4.5)
It looks like it only has a plastic mount
Non-rotating front element
No manual focus on the main body of the lens (it appears to be on the very front of the lens element). I think the 70-300 has a similar focus ring but I can't remember.

From the photos I've seen the build quality looks similar to your stock 28-80.

Of course, I could be wrong on some of the above points :-)
