Another in my Smoky Mountain water series. I struggled with composition

greatly on this one. I couldn't decide between no trees and complete focus

on the water, full trees minimizing the detail in the water, or a compromise

(which is what I went with).

Composition is where I'm seeking the most advice on this one.

    Thank You

  1. I have an obsession with long exposures of moving water. I've been

practicing my technique for a couple of years any time I get the chance. I'm

trying to perfect the amount of "movement" captured in the water while

keeping the exposure and focus correct. I've experienced difficulties in

keeping the image tack sharp and properly composed. critiques on how I

could have better composed the scene are welcome.

    Thanks in advance

Adam, thank you for the comments, and thank you for taking the time to explain, that was above and beyond, and I appreciate it.

in reference to the above question "is this a step in the right direction?" I had tried to upload an edited version of this photo within my comment, but the system keeps telling me the file is too large and rejects the photo upload

Thanks for the advice Bela.  After your comment I did start to notice a couple of distractions that hadn't really stood out to me before.

I'm still a novice, and don't have any photo processing software other than iPhoto, but is this a step in the right direction?

  2. This is the accompanying image that shows the "other half" of the same storm depicted in the previous photo.

The bottom left 1/3 of the photo, above the grass kind of gives a feel for the activity within this cloud.  There were several funnels that formed (some visible in this photo) but never gained enough strength/longevity to reach the ground.

Thank you to all for taking the time to view and comment, I really appreciate it.

This storm was moving so fast that when I pulled off the interstate the first time to attempt to capture it, by the time I retrieved my camera from the trunk I was already beneath the cloud.  I was actually late for work, because  after missing it the first attempt, I then drove 70 mph in the opposite direction of work for 10 minutes just to get far enough ahead of it to give myself enough time time get in a couple of shots before it was on top of me again. I didn't even have time to change lenses (would have loved to gotten a wide angle shot of the entire storm. If you view the next photo in the album you'll see the rest of the cloud)

I had never before seen a storm structure this unique, and haven't seen it again since.

To Radu, I used minimal post processing (just some exposure tweaking) and there are no mountains, everything above the tree line is the storm itself.

Thank you for taking the time to give me your feedback.  I found it to be thoughtful.  I am still a novice having just graduated from a point and shoot to my first DSLR in the spring, so I appreciate any tips and pointers I can get.  I'll definitely try to incorporate your suggestions in the future.

    Thanks again.
