I have to admit, I am really intrigued as to how you got this shot? My guess would be you held your camera up on a monopod or some such and shot through the backboard? Did you use a the canon 10-22 or the tokina 11-16 or something else?

Its a great angle and makes for a very interesting shot, but it would be great if the reflections could be removed somehow..

Great timing on the shot. As a basketball referee/player/coach myself I can appreciate the referee.s and coach's feelings. I too feel that it could have done with keeping the coach's head in the frame. It may also have looked a bit nicer in a portrait orientation shot with both of their full bodies in the shot.

I also think that you could brighten the shot a little in post and possible add a little more contrast.

But nothing beats the timing and you chose an excellent aperture to keep the ref from taking the viewers main point of focus off the coach's face, whilst still retaining enough details to see what is going on.

    Nice Photo.

I like the colours and the view is certainly spectacular.

I think it could have been helped if you corrected the distortion a little. It doesn't bother so much in the lower half of the photo, but I think the curvature of the top half is a little distracting. Also, is it just me or does the bottom right of the image look soft/blurry? maybe that is just an effect of the exposure time.

Overall, it is a pleasing photo and I am envious of your travels to such beuatiful places.

  1. Great photo.

I agree that you have done an excellent job to stop the telescope becoming a silhouette. I don't quite agree with the above comments about cropping the right side out.. I think that the lines of shadow on the ground in that area draw the eye in towards the telescope.

The shadows on the ground all lead to the sun, so that is where the eye is led in the photo. This is about on the left hand support of the telescope and once the eye has been led to this point within the structure of the telescope it allows you to wander and examine all the details of the telescope.

The only way I think the positioning would have been improved would be to have taken the photo from slightly further around to the right so that the shadows on the gorund led the eye closer to the center of the telescope rather than the left edge of it. However I can also see that the flare would be worse if the sun was moved from behind that steel post..

Well Done on an interesting photo.

  2. I like this image. It has very pleasing colours and the photo is quite visually interesting. The DOF adds a lot to the alure of this photo however I feel that the blurred pieces infront of the main subject distract the eye and detract from the image a little. I would have liked to have seen it with the three pawns below the hand and the knight just to the right of the piece being held removed from the board. Or possibly with just the knight removed.

However I have to say that overall I think you have done a fine job in capturing the essense of the game in the way that the player looks like he is so carefully and thoughtfully moving the piece.

  3. I quite enjoy this photo. The curve of the banister works quite well composition wise, to pull pull into the photo. It would have looked better with less noise in the shadows as this detracts from the clean lines. I would also like to have seen the image exposed a little lighter, I think this would make it a little more lively.

Overall v. nice composition, well done.

Excellent photo. I like the high contrast and 'grittiness' (texture) of this photo. However I can't help but feel that it would have felt more pleasing to the viewer if you took it a little further to the left to make the room more symetrical. I beleive this would work well with the strong harsh lines in the photograph.

Great Image. It's a very nice scene and your composition has portrayed it well.

I think it could have been improved by raising the camera angle slightly to cut out the lumpy sand in the bottom right corner and by removing the blue cast of the white wash.

    Well done.

Great photo. These things are definately only one step removed from dinosaurs! I think the detail around the eye really makes this photo.

Great photo. Although your caption is quite amusing and I definitely don't fail to see the funny side of the photo, I think this photo gives a somewhat sad reflection of our society.  None the less, nice work keep shooting!
