Juan, that's a great story and fantastic photo! That's a pretty great idea to use the plant to add some texture to the lighting...
Here's a shot of a sunset over my apartment complex a couple days ago:

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I sort of like the idea of ordering from B&H so I've already got film good to go and then I've got 620 spools too. A little more expensive but two birds with one stone...

Just picked up a Kodak Duaflex IV for $30. Included was the Kodalite midget flash holder (and original manual), some bulbs and a Sunset 101 bag. The camera is in excellent condition with the shutter in working order.
I'm excited since I was considering buying a Holga for a little while to play around with. Now I just have to get some 620 spools and 120 film!

Also, that's an incredible shot Richard!

Hmm. I've been buying used BP-511A's from KEH for my 40D. I've wanted to buy OEM Canon, but would prefer not to pay the full price. Would it be best to just swallow the expense since I'd get more from them in the long run? I think I've paid $25 each or so.
They seem to last pretty well thus far. I've got two 4 gig cards that get filled in a day of random shooting before a battery empties...

Dah, I'm guilty of not searching before asking my question. Found a thread indicating it was b/c of high ISO noise reduction turned on. It's all good now.

The burst rate of my 40D at it's high speed drive setting seems to be exactly 7. I've tested this with the smallest jpeg resolution, the largest jpeg resolution, and RAW files. With RAW+L Jpeg its at 6. After 7 shots it goes right in to the buffer mode where frame rate is lowered to 3 fps.
The battery is a Canon BP-511a, the CF is a sandisk extreme 4GB (40mb/s). The shutter speed was at least 1/2000 each time. Any reason this could be? Supposedly it's rated for approx 6.5 fps for ~15 RAW+JPEG or ~45 JPEG.

Consider a 50mm 1.8 II for the heck of it. I just bought one for its low light capabilities. The image quality is markedly better than the 17-85mm. I'm tempted to sell mine right now (though I won't).

I hear they aren't weather sealed :-X

One option if you think it's just on really tight is a basic filter wrench:
(That's just one option in a general brand)

I don't even know what that part is but I would have to say it is doubtful. Take in to consideration what everyone has posted thus far as everything seems rather accurate. The issues with those photos can primarily just be attributed what has already be mentioned.

I've got a 17-85mm as well. While I haven't been blown away by it, I have never had an issue with it. For whatever faults it may have I find it to be a very useful lens which has never gotten in the way of doing what I want it to.

Edit: The bad rendering of the sky really just seems to be a metering deal. The location of the rocks seems to be a pretty low-light area. The camera metered for the rocks, and when the sun or sky poked through at the top it was blown out because it was just significantly brighter than the rocks.

In landscape photography this is a common issue dealt with because the sky is just about always brighter than the landscape. This is one of the benefits of a polarizer, or graduated neutral density filter in that they will darken up the sky a little bit to get more detail.

Unrelated to any image in particular, but I've seen quite a few mentions of 70-200s and I'm getting anxious. That's my next big investment and you're all making me want to buy one right now!

I saw someone create an image just by using the reflection off a body of water, so I decided to try the same:

That's terrible, very sorry to hear. I hope for the best in your reacquisition of such a nice kit.

I love those colors Robin, fortunately I'm in Oregon so I get to see a bit of them right now!

I finally got to take a trip up to the coast after living in Oregon for almost a year. Here's one of my more favorite shots. It's a handheld 3 shot panorama, tried to fix distortion as much as possible...

Is the 6mos payment deal through BillMeLater? If so I would reconsider that. Search reviews for that service (quick google - http://www.my3cents.com/search.cgi?criteria=bill+me+later), decide if any potential problems are worth the risk.

No personal experience on 5D. Are you looking at mark I or II?
I purchased a 40D from KEH.com (used). Very happy with the service.
However I've heard B&H Photo and Adorama are very good as well for used equipment. It probably just comes down to the deal that best suits you. I know KEH has a 6mos warranty on their used equipment, not sure about the other two.

This sort of reminds me of some of the debates I've heard about the Lytro. F/2 Aperature, no shutter, post capture focusing!? There's NO WAY DSLRs are going to keep up with that!

I could care less with what people are using, I'm completely happy with my meager setup and if someone enjoys using their iPhone in that aspect then more power to them. Whatever facilitates you taking more shots and enjoying the process is what you should stick with.

If somebody is feeling threatened about iPhone photography they should focus more so on why they aren't feeling competent about their own work...

If the sky is naturally a darker blue on that day maybe use an EV of ~-2/3 stop? That's a relatively easy way to bring out some darker colors. Or as many people have mentioned you can just play with some sliders, as seen above vibrance does well along with altering a bit of the blue luminance.

The Samyang 8mm FE is more or less also the Rokinon/Bower/Pro-Optic 8mm F/3.5 FE.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/8mm-f35.htm
You can find it in one or more of those brand names through Adorama or B&H.

If you say 15MP is for hype, then what is your opinion of the 7D?
