    The Fountain

          8

    I don't mind sharing.

    My camera settings:

    F/22, 800ISO, 18mm FL,

    5s, 10s, 20s, 30s shutter speed for 4 exposure HDR.

I needed to use a high F-value because I wanted to create the star-burst effect with the lights, it also gave me a high DoF.

I can't remember exactly what my focal point was.  It was probably around the rim of the fountain as I tend to focus in moderately close.  I used auto focus to focus, then turned to manual when I took the photo's.  Obviously I needed a good tripod for the long and multiple exposures.  I used long exposure noise reduction in camera.  On this particular night there was no wind so it gave me very smooth water and almost no movement of the foliage.

I used HDR Efex Pro to create the HDR color image.  I kept the HDR more to the realistic side.  I tried surreal but it looked bad.  I did some additional post process noise reduction.  I did some selective sharpening - specifically to the concrete of the fountain and puddles in the courtyard.  I did the B&W conversion in PS using a gradient map adjustment layer.  I played around with individual red/green/blue channels under the gradient map to create the effect I wanted.  I added a very subtle vignette to emphasize the fountain and courtyard.

    I hope this helped.

    I shot this back in March 2011 at sunrise. I used a 10-stop B+W

ND1024 filter. This was my first attempt at playing around with

digital cross-processing on a landscape image.

    Comments welcome.

I took this photo a couple of months ago during a photo tour of

abandoned factories in the Brantford Brownfields. It is an HDR image.

Even with the HDR I found the colors a bit bland. I tried color

enhancement with digital cross-processing. I've only recently started

playing around with digital cross processing.

I did some color adjustment in LAB color space, I may have went a little heavier than usual.  Now that you pointed it out I do notice how much blue hue there is in the shadows.

    Thank you for the comment.

  1. I used a 10-stop B+W ND to get this exposure.

I took this photo the day after a heavy rainfall so the water was flowing fast and was kicking up a lot of dirt, so it was browner than normal.  I do find this ND can add a bit if a brown cast also.
