  1. You are correct, it is an ibis, probably White-faced Ibis. Nice photo.
  2. Long-tailed weasel Neogale frenata
  3. Sorry I should have said that my bird is a Wilson's Snipe Gallinago delicata. Our European members will likely recognise it as very similar to their Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago. Thanks for the interest.
  4. Cassin's Finch [i think] in Blue Spruce
  5. We're in the dog days of summer here in New Mexico. Many wildflowers are past their best. A lot of bird nesting is over. Migration hasn't really started. Plus it's HOT and DRY. Thank you to everyone who posts, and especially the thread-starters!

By now you probably have made your decision wrt lenses, but here are my thoughts. When traveling for wildlife I have been happy with my Canon 100-500. Portability seems more important - as I get older - than focal length or aperture. I can see that special circumstances could make the 600mm nice, but generally, and with newer bodies, and especially while traveling, I'd say more hassle than it's worth. Have a great trip, and please post some photos.
  7. I'm no ptarmigan expert. This is a male in breeding plumage. Sibley tells me that Willow Ptarmigan has a rich rufous neck, rock more dark grey and brown, and willow speckled black on white. Your bird looks more rufous than anything. Not sure if that helps sorry. Thanks for posting the interesting image, and for keeping this column going. Incidentally if you post to iNaturalist.org real experts will chime in.
