1. Hi All. I have been using the creative suites which is costly especially since I have not been using the programs much. I do have CS6 from a few years ago, in fact I think I also have CS5 and CS4 but I found they limit the re-installs and updates because they want you to pay monthly for use. I am not using Photoshop or LR more than a few times a year. I do like have Adobe Acrobat Pro. What do people do? Also I have now switched over to a Mac and when I had the CS's I had a PC. Will this present a problem? Thanks for any suggestions?
  2. I am going to Costa Rica. I just started a birding class. My lens 70-200L is not strong enough. I am not sure how passionate I will be about wildlife photography but I want to purchase a lens. I have a Canon 7D. Some photographers in my class have suggested I switch to Nikon.

    Here is my situation.

I would like a good lens but I have a hard time with a heavy lens.

Should I buy one of the following or an extender 1.4 or 2.0. I do not like the idea of compromising sharpness. Will I be unhappy with the extender? I am not a professional photographer and this is not my occupation but I do enjoy sharp pictures.

    Canon:

    EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

    EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM

EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM

    Extenders?

I have not done much video work with my 7D. I will be videotaping a 3 hour indoor training program for future trainings. I have a few questions.
1. Battery- do you recommend I purchase a AC battery adapter? If so, what do you think of some of the cheap knock-offs available on amazon or anywhere on the internet?
2. Sound: I am going to use external microphones (either lapel or hand-held). Do I need anything specific, other than the mike?
3. Lighting: This is my big question: I am only familiar with speedlights. What can I do to light the room and do I need to purchase external lights? I am thinking of using my L 24-105 lens. Any suggestions or thoughts?
Or would you suggest using a video camera instead?
Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
4.
I normally use a Canon 7D and I also have a 30D. I use L lenses and a powergrip. I am having back issues and am finding carrying around a heavy camera, camera bag with multiple lenses, etc. too much for me at times. I would like to purchase a good quality point and shoot. I shoot in the raw. Lens quality, speed are also important to me. I did have a Canon G9 and had a horrible experience with it (I understand there was a problem with an internal screw). Canon let me trade it back in. I was going to purchase another Canon when I noticed my photography teacher using a Lumix. Now, I am open to any and all suggestions. I probably will use this for travel, family events, indoor shooting and times when I just can not carry heavy equipment.
Suggestions?
And thanks
5.
hi all
I am full of questions today. I just go the Canon Macro 100mm 2.8 and shot some pictures. I would like the option of closer photos. Should I consider the 1-5X Canon or what is your opinion on using the extension rings ( kenko, fotodiox, or others?) Since I have not ventured much into macro photography I am unsure the direction I will be going. I have admired macros work of others....(insects, flowers, drops of water, fish, etc.)
Suggestions? I currently am using the 30D and a roommates 7D.

  6.
Question:
When I had my sensor cleaned the repair person questioned why I did not protect my lenses with a filter? I decided to buy the pro digital UV for my 35-105L (77mm) and 70-300 (58mm). I went with Hoya. I just shot some pictures and really do not like the blue tint which I could change during post production but why start out with something you really do not like. The only pictures I liked using the filter where at sunset. I am not sure of the return policy ( I just got them a few days ago) but before I ventured further I wanted to ask others what they thought? Opinions? I shoot raw usually manual or AV. I have Canon Eos 7 D and 30D.
I am finding I am spending so much time on post production in front of the monitor and less time out shooting which is what I enjoy. Are their suggestions of making corrections to my camera before I shoot to counter the UV filter? I really don't want to get into removing filters between shoots.

Suggestions, comments, ideas????

Thanks

  7.
I am in the market for a new monitor. I am considering either the NEC PA241W or perhaps the Dell Ultrasharp. The Eizo is out of my price range considering I am a serious photographer but am not doing it for a living. Are there other monitors I might consider? Which would you recommend for my purpose?

Secondly, does the NEC come with calibration software ( Spectraview) or is this just a system within the monitor? What about the Dell? What calibration software would you recommend?
I work on a PC which I just purchased and Epson 3880 printer.
THanks so much

  8.
What backup system do you use and why?

We have a 6 computer network using video, photography, audio, document files with mixed PC and MAC users. What backup systems do you recommend and why? Things we need to consider RAID or not to RAID, automatic backup, quiet machine, speed of backup, etc. We are looking for 5 TB system....
We have narrowed our choices to:
Drobo, Synology, QNAP, Verbatim, LaCie, Thecus....
Thank you for your help, assistance and expertise.

  9.
I am shopping for a NAS with automatic backup. We have 6 computers on our family network. I work from two of them, sometimes the same files. Ideally, I would like a NAS with automatic backup and one that can network my two computers into the same folder. I frequently work on the same documents from two different computers and want to avoid redundancy. I have had to send the files back and forth and have many version of the same document. This goes for photos as well. I work on two different PC's and a Mac in a photo lab. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can achieve my goals.

I looked into the Drobo but am not sure it will achieve my needs. We would like something we can grow into but then again the technology keeps changing. I was looking at 3-5TB. It would be great to avoid having to may for an automatic backup service such as carbonite. Is there something I am missing? Thanks so much all.

  10.
I currently have 2quad CPU 2.4 with 4 gb RAM 32-bit. HP
with HP 24", 1920 x 1200 resolution. I have blue ray, DVD burner, CD, TV tuner,
I also have 17" HP laptop with quad 2.2 4gb ram, 32-bit
Both using Vista Utilmate.
I run two external hard drives.
I have a small laptop 13" travel laptop with Windows 7.
All of these are almost 3 years old and ready to be reformatted and passed on to my kids. We have tried using Buffalo Technology ( 4 RAID) networking which never worked.
What kind of networking systems do people use?
Our family has 6 computers on our system ( including 1 MAC PRO laptop which isn't mine) My oldest daughter is a law school student with undergrad in broadcast journalism and uses Final Cut Pro.
I realize we have a lot of variables. I was about to purchase another Creative Suites 5 so replacing it in MAC is not that big of a deal. I am using Microsoft Office 2007. I just don't want to waste money. I would rather pick up a great Epson printer or another lens for the difference between a MAC and PC, if that is the case.
Question: What brand PC computers are you using? I have a mixture of Dell's and HP and stuck to them because of the warranty but I am now totally open. I just don't want to use a new company that might be gone tomorrow.
Can I tell you how much I appreciate all this? I just did.

  11.
The time has come. I need a new computer. I use multiple programs (photoshop, raw, lightroom, indesign, dreamweaver, adobe bridge, microsoft suites, internet windows, video editing, etc. ) all at the same time. It has been a disaster. I have taken to using my desktop and laptop side by side. Currently, I am using a PC, quad-core, 4gb memory but am considering
Either moving to Mac Pro 8 or 12 core with two screens, 16 gb memory, etc. It is expensive. Plus my home-office consists of a network of 5 other PC's. Apple says I can network using a new program which will convert any PC document into MAC. In the past, when I edit photos using a MAC ( I have access to Epson 3880, 4880 printers) or work in Final Cut Pro and then come home I can not work on the photo or video. I split my external hard drive into MAC and PC.

My question is this. Would you recommend staying with a PC. What product? What hardware? 6 core, 8 core, how much memory, recommendation. I want a computer I do not grow out of but can expand. I also need to be able to back-up and network. Has anyone worked with Time Capsule?
I would like to hear your opinions regarding Mac vs. PC, what specific computers and hardware, graphic cards, etc. would you recommend. Sometimes I think I have a handle on this stuff and then they go ahead and invent new products on me.
Would someone please hold my hand through this process? Thanks so much.
