1.
@Wiliiam: Thanks for your response, not sure how old the batteries are, as I have 3 Nikon bodies all using the same batteries, all bought at different times, but the battery wouldnt have anything to do with the card not reading in a card reader. How do I do a re-set? That sounds like it might help, but i've never done it before.

 2.
@Carl: do you mean drive letter on the computer? Because it doesnt even show up on the comp, its as if I havent plugged anything in. I have tried different cables, but for now only have the one card reader. I have also tried to connect the camera directly to the Mac, also didnt register anything, not even reconise that something had been plugged it. Once, there was a little warning pop-up screen that said "the computer doesnt recognise the drive you are attempting to read" I paraphrase, cant remember the exact wording... but it never showed up again with all the other attempts.

 3.
@Peter. I dont have another reader here, but will nick one from the studio. Also thought of the bent pins and checked, but they seem ok. I'm pretty sure the problem isnt the reader though, because it will read a card that hasn't been in the D700 recently (I also shoot with a D300 and a D200 as my back-up body)

 4.
I did reformat the card, as mentioned in the original question, but it still didnt read. I also format everytime I shoot, and I also thought that it was the end of the road for that card, no big deal.
the problem is that the same thing happened to the next card, which had been working perfectly 5 minutes earlier, but after I put it in the camera, shot a few frames and then tried to download, it had the same problem...

 5.
Hi, Sorry, its a Compact Flash, not an SD... my bad

Im using a Delkin multi-slot card reader, my first thought was that it was the card reader too, but it read the one CF perfectly until after I put it in the D700.

 6.
Hi there

I use a Nikon D700, have had it a year or so now and it has never given any significant problems until recently. I went to download a card and the card didnt show up on my Mac, didnt read it at all. Tried another card, showed up fine. Same thing on a PC. Then I formatted the card (in the D700) Didnt help. So I figured it was the end of the road for that particular SD card, luckily the photos weren't important, so I figured, could have been worse.
Then, put a new card in the camera (the same one that read fine on the Mac and PC earlier) shot a few test frames and tried to download it... neither computer could read the card. So now i'm thinking the camera is doing something to the cards? Images show up on the D700 screen, everything appears normal while the card is in camera but it doesnt register on the computers... What's going on? Should I be freaking out? Please help!

Thanks for your time.
Kerry
