Do you know if the reason they don't like it is because of the USM? Or does it lack sharpness or something of that sort?

I am thinking of purchasing the 50mm 1.4, the price is around 300. i dont think i can argue with that. Especially since the "L" series is over a grand. does anyone have any experience with this lens? any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

being an ex-soldier, ex-fireifghter, and current EMT i have learned over time that separating yourself from the job is a key requirement for mental self preservation. the point is you cant bring the work home with you. if you are unable to accomplish this i would suggest another field. you are their to do a job. in this case document and photograph some harsh realities of the world.
no one wants to witness what was depicted in the video. i personally would probably move on to another location, being an unarmed civilian. there are so many variables that would come into play in this situation or any situation like this one. if you were to intervene chances are you would loose your life along with the child's. but like i said, so many variables come into play. i would just suggest that everyone stays as safe as possible and complete your task. if you can safely save someones life or make a positive difference in the outcome of a terrible situation that will be enough reward to last you a lifetime.
the reality is that you will encounter ,at some point, something that hits you that you cannot forget or let go. what you do and how you handle the event at the time will make or break it. if you know there is something that could have been done and you did nothing, that in itself will haunt you far worse than witnessing a traumatic event that you know was out of your control.

thanks everyone much appreciated. my primary uses are infact landscape, nature, and long exposure. and i would say i do some moderate hiking to get to locations, however weight isnt a huge factor for me personally. i would say the end result of a sharp image and quality is my major concern. i am rather new to photography and have been at it for 3 years now. the crap tripod i bought when i started has broke which is what put me in the market. thanks again for all the advice.
