1.
I want to thank you all for this information. I was shooting RAW in Av mode because I'm a bit nervous about going completely manual....however, I can see that it will be necessary to do that.
Here is what I'm working with for lights.... I have 3 soft box continuous lights (a top light and two sides). No flash. I have experimented with removing the top light and setting the others much farther back but that doesn't seem to help much. The ISO setting, as I remember, was really high, so by reducing that dramatically, that will help, I'm sure. I just need to get a better understanding of how all these settings can be adjusted to produce the results I want. Like I mentioned...I'm very new to photography and really don't understand the camera yet.
If the ISO should be around 200, what would you suggest for an fstop? I would appreciate some suggestions for settings to try for this type of shot.
Also...yes, I think I need to get the person farther away from the backdrop...problem is, I'm working with a very small space, so I may only be able to do a couple feet farther out.
Again....thanks so much for this feedback! It's worth it's weight in gold to me! This community is wonderful!

 2.
I am quite new to studio photography, but enjoying experimenting with portraits and black backgrounds. My question is, even though there are times when this is a fun effect, I can't seem to get good skin tone without a LOT of photoshop work...and even then, the highlights on the figure are often blown out. I have tried numerous settings and moved the lights farther away from the subject, but this still happens.
Can anyone tell me how to improve this issue.
Here is an untouched photo that shows what's happening. For this photo I actually liked the effect, but I don't want this in all my shots.
