1.
85mm f1.8d is a great lens.

I have that, plus the 85mm f1.4d and the sigma hsm 50mm f1.4.

If I had the 18-70, and I think that is a VR lens, it's a toss up, the 85mm 1.8d or the 50mm 1.4d.
If the choice included a 50mm 1.4G AF-s, I would probably take that.

I have written a review of the 85mm 1.8D and some of the other possible choices here: http://glamourphotography.co/?p=4841
My use is primarily glamour portraiture.
The go to lenses I use tend to be the 17-55 2.8, the sigma 50 hsm 1.4 and the 70-200 vr2 2.8... I shoot a Nikon D7000, which is similar format to the D70. Used to have the D70, about when this question was asked.
If I didn't have the pro glass, and only had the 18-70, I think I might go a 50mm 1.4, as it is easier to hand hold than the 85, particularly on a crop camera. And, the 50mm will be the sharpest lens in your bag for a valuable focal length in crop sensor portraiture, ie 50mm....

 2.
I just got my cyber commander a couple weeks back and started using it recently.
So far, I am mostly really pleased with it, tho it was not all intuitive to set up.
Lucky for me the guys at Buff were really helpful.
Cyber Commander Initial Setup is a bit of a trick, until you get the hang of it.
Still, so far I am happy with my purchase of the Cyber Commander and 4 CyberSyncs, the plug in models.
Tho I am still learning to use them. They are not plug and shoot. While the features seem awesome. They take some bit of learning.
