1.
Friendly advice, Hilton head South Carolina in July is hot and humid, very hot and humid. In most cases if you're not on the beach or out on a golf course there's very little in the way of breeze to help prevent perspiration. Also sand fleas and mosquitoes are extremely bad, absolutely make sure you have some mosquito repellent for you and your client. Also have with you a cooler full of cool water, not cold It'll make you pass out. And remember because of the humidity be prepared for your lenses fog if you walk outside. I know it gets hot and humid in Chicago too, but in the South in July it can still be 85 or 90° at five o'clock in the morning. Good luck.

 2.
Brook, Have you had any success recovering the images?
I personally have a bad habit of leaving the format enhanced on my tool selection. Meaning as I'm scrolling through all my menu options, format is selected as I passed by. And even though it's a multiple step process to reformat the card, it could happen.
The strange thing for you is that your frame count has changed. When you spoke with Canon what was their explanation?
I wish the best for you, specially when you have to explain it to your client. I photograph with a 5Dll and two 7D's , and at my last wedding one of my 7D had a software issue that would not allow me to control my shutter speed.

Word of mouth seems to be the best. Advertising (for photographer) seems to be the hardest thing we do. I myself was fishing for ideas, when I read your post. I have never used the online classifieds because of the reputation for low budget, fly by night and low quality photographers who advertise on them in my area. Though I have heard of others such as yourself, having success with these avenues, and I find myself tempted.
As to marketing to high-end tourist. You may try to establish a relationship with a local business that already caters to this market such as a local tourist attraction, and possibly offer them a percentage of sales. Smaller Tour businesses may be a good place to start. Such as carriage rides, or boat tourers.

 4.
Like Alan, I also have a 530 DG super and in many ways I like it over my 580 exll"s . The controls are a lot easier to operate and less confusing. Physically it is not as robust as the 580s but the new 610 may be different, and for half the price it's worth a look.

 5.
Be careful what you ask for Rocky. You my get more than you bargained For.

Q flash does not solve these problems. I wish I owned one though.

Best response I've read . :)

 6.
Every camera I use has a flash mounted on it. Plus I have two additional flashes mounted on stands. Everyone's methods and styles are different I'm merely letting you know how I use my equipment. If my equipment was limited, I would forgo the lights on stands and keep the flashes on the camera. Things happen so fast at a wedding as I'm sure you know, you don't want to look like a monkey running around trying to grab a flash on a stand and move it from here to there.
One of my cameras I wear on my body using a binocular Harness. The other with a long lens own a shoulder strap. I really need to alter that to a holster but it's worked for me.

 7.
I second Nadine's advice about multiple flashes.Plus multiple flashes will give your images a more dynamic appearance. Mixed color temperatures that are given off by ambient lights within the room. Such as fluorescent, incandescent, and even halogen vapor. Are most probably what is causing your white balance issues. This can also be corrected by use of color gel's on your flash but Nadine's advice is better.
Now my advice for your inconsistent flash is to use your flash exposure lock. ( FEL ) It alters the way the flash works slightly by metering in a mode more similar to center weighted rather than evaluative. This will allow you to have more consistent Exposure on the subject of your image. Second try to avoid anything in the foreground of your image when not using FEL especially, light colored objects in the foreground will kill your flash power and dark colored objects will overexpose your image. You can do simple test at home by placing objects closer to you than your intended target and notice the difference.

 8.
Hello everyone I have a bride who lives in Atlanta, Georgia and next week I'm going there to photograph her portrait. I'm looking for some locations for a nice environmental shoot. Things to keep in mind first, the location needs to be good for early morning lighting. Second I do have portable lighting and power but it is slightly heavy and my carting system does not travel well over rough surfaces. Third, I'm from South Carolina, and not very familiar with the Atlanta area. So I will have to map quest these locations or put it into my GPS. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

 9.
I second what Harry said, Just because the light is inexpensive does not make it a bad light. The flash tube and the capacitor are what make the most difference in consistent output, not price. And I second the vagabond pack by Peter S. it converts DC to AC power so your mono plugs straight in. You can also build your own portable power pack, here is a link to another post on that same topic read my reply at the bottom. I hope it's of some help
10.
Minneapolis Parks and Recreation fee for photographing. This is a fine example of what can happened. Let's say (Dave) lives in Moose Lake, or Duluth. He travels to Minneapolis to photograph a client or maybe a family member. Suddenly an unexpected expense, if this is the location for the event. It could happen to any of us.
Dave- I know this doesn't help, but your situation is one I think most can learn from. I wish you the best of luck in resolving the matter, led us know what finally happens.
I wonder what the fee in Minneapolis is for using a cell phone? That kind of thing burns me up.

 11.

I'd prefer to use a gray card because my camera can't focus on the plain white and does not allow me to release the shutter unless I switch to manual focus.

The only thing you have to do to use a white card is focus lock on something in the distance. Then photograph the card. The reason you focus lock on something in the distance is so the focus will be set to infinity

 12.
Thanks for posting this question, this is good food for thought in respect to how one words their own contracts. My own contracts have always had stipulations for travel and overnight expenses, but this was truly an unforeseen expense. I wonder if the bride and groom also had to purchase an insurance policy, or was it part of their contract with the venue? Unfortunately in the United States, people love to sue.(The coffee was too hot and I spilled it on myself) I think you should contact the bride and groom and asked if they were required to have insurance. If I were on a jury I would think the person leasing the venue would be responsible for all guests and vendors. I would also expect the venue to show proof of insurance in case their coffee was too hot, or a slippery floor in their restroom.

 13.
This question is for those using paid wedding sites.(Theknot, OneWed, Brides) Most of these sites have a paid or a free listings results. If you have a paid listing, do you find this to be money well spent? How many GOOD leads, do you receive?

 14.
For those who don't know Groupon takes 50% of all end Sales. So if the purchase price of a groupon is say $30. The vendor only receives $15 . This is what I was told by a local restaurant that participated. The only thing that help's save the vendor in some cases is that not all coupons are redeemed.

 15.
You can also build your own. The information on how to do so is available on the Internet if you just look. I built my own portable power pack using a deep cycle wheelchair battery 72 amp hours and a 300 W purer sine wave inverter, and a toolbox. It's really not very hard to do. Though mine is a little heavy, will power a 600 W and two 400 W. Monolights for at least 20 cycles. It may go more but I've never used it beyond that. If you do decide to build your own the most critical part is to purchase a purer sine wave inverter. The reason for this is because purer sine wave matches household power like from your wall socket, cheaper modified sine wave inverters can damage modern electronics. I am giving you this information as an alternative. If you do not feel comfortable with building your own then do not try it. Here is a short YouTube video that I found that you may want to watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKoaQZSAnyQ&feature=related
I hope it is of some help.
I see that the link is not working properly. So if you go to YouTube and punching in (homemade Vegabond inverter portable power source) . Then click on the first video.

 16.
If there were, I think their server would be shut down by all the traffic. It also depends on the type of photography work you're looking for. On occasions there are people on craigslist looking for photographers, but a lot of them are scams or people with no money.

Good luck !
