1.
The day is coming to a close here - Hope everyone has had a very good Christmas (and hope everyone was able to get some good Christmas Day shots)

 2.
I think that there are a variety of nice lenses out there for you, including the AF-S DX NIKKOR
18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. Talk to your local camera store associates and see what they have.
You might want to try choosing two or three lens recommendations that you receive and renting those lenses for a while to find out which one suits you best.

Best of luck to you.

 3.
Hammish,
That is a beautiful photo!
Adam,
Check the sunrise and sunset times for the area and time that you're planning your trip for.
In Fairbanks in August a few years back, I never saw the night . . .10:00 PM and there was more than enough natural light to take photos of the gardens that surrounded my hotel.
Good luck, and have a great time when you go. Gorgeous scenery, wildlife, small towns, glaciers . . . If you don't catch the aurora, there is so much else to photograph.

 4.
Saturday afforded some time to actually get out and take some photos.
This morning, 13 inches of snow on the ground so far has kept me home with a chance to peek at photonet.
This was taken January 8, in Derby, Connecticut
