i've had my EF for quite a while now, and i replace batteries every 6 months or so, depending on usage. i never keep the power switch in the on position, as the light meter continually drains it. don't get me wrong, i do take a lot of photos, but i'm just cheap as well, soi tend to be conservative with batteries, as the 1.35 volt ones are a bïtch to find. just flick the switch down after shooting.
EDIT: i forgot to mention that instead of the "recommended" 1.35 volt cells, i use duracell PX625A, which are 1.5 volts each. the reason why the batteries last me a really long time would be that these things are made by duracell, and i would have to say that these batteries last, even in non-photographic uses.
the awesome thing is... the higher voltage seems to have no detrimental effect on the camera or the exposure quality. here is a pic of me and my family's dog.
iso200, 1/125s, f? (people say that anything 200-speed film is crap, but i came across come cheap and good rolls at the local CVS pharmacy lol)

Which Canon film bodies still work?
