Well... that (the D3) didn't do so well.... major issues as previously discussed on here. Oil and much dust on the sensor. I will hold out to see what August may have in terms of new releases or go with the D800. Thank goodness it was a reputable company and will accept the return.

Just wanted to finish this off with letting you all know how very appreciative I am that you have taken such time to respond and with the wealth of knowledge that I needed.
I have just now purchased a Nikon D3 (used with a warranty) with 50,000 actuations (well 50,564) it was at a price that I could not refuse.... 2200.00. I believe at this time and what I do that this is a great compliment and back up to my D700 or the D700 as the back up either which way... and yes Shaun, dual memory cards makes me feel a bit more secure.
Thank you all so very much once again,

I have personally found it very informative and interesting..... Thank you !!
And yes... I have been following this all.
I appreciate all the knowledge, opinions and information regarding this.

To all that have contributed to this thought process of mine... I apologize for the "tinker toy" comment. It was not meant to offend anyone in any which way. As Eric had stated.... I just prefer a bit different feel. Again, I am sorry. There was not to be a debate over my comment... my fault for using the wrong choice of words.
I do believe I will be considering the move to another D700 as so many have stated or move up to the D3 or D4 (just have to save a bit more for those).
And I wrote this thought yes a year ago after the D800 was released. I am not one to jump on the new technology... therefore I wanted those who did make that change to speak of their experiences, troubles or concerns which was and has been done here in the past 2 days. Thank you !!

Kent... I need a second body on hand at all times. I have scheduled clients and wouldn't nor shouldn't tolerate "My camera is in the shop". I am sure you understand. I make a decent living off what I do.... I need the comfort of knowing I have a back up and a good one.

Shun... I am questioning if I really need the upgrade or if it is even worth it. The 600 felt like a tinker toy to me. I want something solid... the D700 is that. The D800 is that. Yes the dual card slot but like Kevin stated I have never had bad memory in all the years that I have been doing this. For a price difference of almost 1700.00 (new 800 with grip) vs the D700 @ 1700.00 I am questioning if I really do need to "upgrade". I don't need the latest and greatest.... never have been in that group. Thanks for all this help once again.

I have the D700 and it does everything I need it to.... I have a D7000 as a back up body which I haven't touched in a year ..... It just doesn't compare I know.
I have the opportunity to by a refurb D700 from Nikon for 1700.00 ....Or do I upgrade to the D800?
Like I said the D700 does everything that I need it to do. I have all my Nikon glass with the exception of the 70-200. But, my money maker right now is the D700.
So....do I bite the bullet and spend the extra 1600.00 (grip and body) for the D800 or stay with my thoughts of the refurb?

Thank you all once again !

Jason... I do not have spare Money and I am making a decent living doing photography however, I do only want to have a full frame 2nd body "eventually" and was just tossing around the idea and wanted professional and real life users to share experiences and knowledge.
That is why I come to this forum and pay to be a member. I have always gotten amazing advice and help when I have needed it most.
I also understand that better cameras do not take better pictures... it's the tools you have and how you use them. I am just saying.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I am set with storage... I run 2-2TB drives for my clients and a 1-1TB for personal... I purge once a year and remotely store the oldest drive and replace. I never store anything internally. As far as processing... I am running 12gig of ram and it runs quite smoothly.
Also... I am set on my lenses. The shake may be an issue. haha I am older and have hand issues so it will be a bit a learning curve I am sure.
I run two bodies so that I don't have to change lenses in bad situations (to answer another on here). I don't like to change lenses in the cold or outside on a location so I will often run my prime of choice on the D700 and usually the 24-70 on my backup (right now my D7000).
It's much easier to grab another camera than it is to change lenses when doing children and moving subjects.

Steven...

That was quite eloquent ! And just what I was looking for at the same time.
By the end of this year or the first of next I will have the D800 thanks to all of you with the amazing feed back !

Evan.... I learned the hard way with lenses. I have tried Tamaron and Sigma both at different times with different lenses. I much prefer Nikkor / Nikon glass ... the clarity and performance exceeds 2nd market lenses every time . Just my opinion of course.

-

Thanks so much for everyones thougthts.... it is appreciated. I will be considering the upgrade of my backup (D7000) to the D800.

Thank you all again !

-

I guess it's not really an upgrade as much as it is a replacement of my second body.

-

John...
Thank you ! You seemed to have answered one question that was in the back of my mind. Similarity of bodies. I do not want to acclimate myself with each camera as I am hearing of the D600. Whereas the D800 and D700 are the same. I also use battery grips on all my cameras... I feel it better balances for me personally.

Dave..
My concern is that if there were something to happen to it I would need to replace it. I am thinking about replacing the D7000 anyway with a Full frame.
I have my lenses covered with:
Nikkor 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, Macro 105 f2.8, 85 1.4,70-300 f4.5-5.6, 24-70 f2.8 and lusting after the 70-200 maybe yet this year.
I like to have a back up camera all the time due to the schedules I keep. I couldn't be without. I do like the option of the dual card slots of the D800 as the D7000 has also.

I totally adore my D700 .... I would use this forever. Problem is that they are sparse. I use a D7000 as a back up right now (my D7000 was my primary for a bit). But... I really like the results from my D700 the iso the noise, clarity etc...
My question is......... What exactly would be the upgrade or new equality of the D700?
I am not convinced that the D600 is an upgrade nor am I totally convinced that the D800 is what I am looking for.
I primarily shoot portraits, children, newborn, families etc... my other passions are nature, flowers, macro, nature. My portraits don't have a problem printing at 16x20 or even larger. My nature is about the same...
What would be the better choice? Or should I wait it out for whatever Nikon would have in the near future? I am not looking to make the leap quickly. Probably well after the first of the year. But, this is the only place I go to for honesty and feed back as it's always been top notch and helpful.

Thank you all once again,

When in PSE I went to "color settings" and it's set to none which gives the proper coloring (as it always has) my monitor and printing are calibrated.... I am not having an issue with printing... it's with viewing in ACR and then PSE two different worlds of coloring it seems.

-

When I "open as" in PSE 9 it goes to camera raw....
It defaults to as shot....
My camera calibration is Adobe Standard...
How do I change it to rgb? It was fine a week ago... I am sorry I am very confused.
I even reset it to all the defaults and it's the same.

-

I have PSE9 and it is updated.... I also updated to the newest ACR 6.5.0.216 and for some reason my raw files are horribly dull and not true to life or to settings color.
I have tried changing the source in raw (vivid, standard, etc) and there is no difference.
I have triple checked my camera settings and nothing has changed (as it was fine a week ago).
I use a D700 and a D7000 and both when opened in ACR are the same dull lifeless images until I open them in PSE and then they are colored properly.
All help and suggestions are welcome !
I have LR sitting here in a box that I haven't loaded yet.... however, I haven't loaded it because I haven't had the spare time to acclimate myself with a new program and flow. If you also have suggestions on that I would appreciate it.

Thank you

I moved to the D700 about 6 months ago at the time that the D800 was being released at a very good price with warrenty... I have NOT regretted it for a minute. It took me from DX to FX in a very smooth transition and quality of images is outstanding. I am still waiting for more reviews on the D800 to consider ridding my D7000 (which is my second body) for the D800. But, until the bugs and reviews are in I am more than happy with my choice of the D700.

Very nice... Thank you for sharing.
I couldn't imagine pushing my 12gb of ram on one image. Wow !!!

Simon... as Matt has said "With a fairly well-made, uncropped D7000 image, I wouldn't hesitate to have a good lab print 30x40 inches for the usual viewing circumstances that such a large print tends to support. That's a large print, especially when you're done mounting/framing, etc. "
Well... I do this a lot for my customers using the D7000. I have never had a issue with a print going 30x40 uncropped... some portrait and some vehicles and nature.
Good luck !!!!

Michael...
That would make sense. There wasn't any gray in the pink blossoms you are right. THANK YOU ! I was beginning to think I was crazy. LOL The sample images were just straight jpegs out of the camera. I was able to fix the raw into some pretty amazing images.. especially the star magnolia. I like to shoot raw and jpeg as education to myself while adjusting to a new body.

Stay with D700 or upgrade?
