Here's an example of the problem I'm having with the colors.

A question for the experts...
I have been unsuccesful in adjusting the white balance on my
camera. I have followed Canon's instructions and seem to be
making the situation worse. The problem I have exacerbated is
a strange rainbow effect from one side of the image to the other
(top to bottom). Red at the top, blue at the bottom and some
strange color disortions thru the middle. I am primarily
interested in getting a good setting for portraits in tungsten
lighting. But when I shot a white image (as per instructions) to
calibrate the settings, something went wrong. Can anyone
advise me on how to proceed correctly? Thanks!

Hello,
I am having difficulty sending email today. So I wanted to thank everyone for their quick repsonses to my post. Indeed, the problem had to do with the mode I was using. It was not clear to me in the documentation that particular modes didn't allow for the C.fn settings. So, it seems that the problem is solved.
Thank you all!

I just purchased a canon d60. Oddly, the software in the camera
is missing two important options related to Custom Functions.
They simply don't show up in the menu. I have been trying to get
tech support from the company I bought it from but they're
brushing me off. Anyone know if you can upgrade the software
on the camera? Maybe I can solve the problem without sending
the camera back? Any help would be welcome.

Again, thank you all for your prompt responses and suggestions to my question. I described the problem to Canon ECare and here's what they said (doesn't sound good):
"The type of distortion you've described is usually only seen when
working near powerful magnetic fields. This is not a normal occurrence.
Unfortunately, this means that the camera will need to be examined by a
service technician. We regret this inconvenience."
The company I bought the camera from -- shopsunshine.com -- has said they will have me send the camera back and replace it (I only just got it a week or so ago and haven't exposed it to magnates or anything). However, they are suspiciously slow in getting back to me about this matter, and this concerns me a bit.
I did try testing the camera in one lightsource and the problem still occurs. And the color gradation is consistent from top to bottom regardless of lighting conditions, so I suspect there is something wrong with the camera.
Anyone have experience w/ shopsunshine.com? They say they're all about customer service but given how expensive the camera was, I'm wondering if they'll really make good.
