Thanks everyone. I will be going for the canon due to it's excellent af and lower f.

Folks,
I am ready to pull the trigger on a Canon 35L but I came across some really good reviews of the Zeiss Distagon 35/2, however, I can't seem to find many image samples. A lot of Distagon owners mentions that hard to define magic touch of the Distagon and I'd like to see some examples before chalking that characteristic up to purchase justification. I know it's a manual lens and that doesn't bother me one bit. Does anyone have experience with both 35s? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

A quick update. Canon has had my camera since last Wednesday and just began testing it this Tuesday. Apparently, my package was left unattended and they didn't realize they had it until I called and asked for a status update. As of today, it's still in testing which is frustrating since the issue is reproducable within a couple of minutes. So far, I am far from impressed by their technical support.

Ok so it's not the memory card but I have narrowed down the problem further. The camera can lock up by me simply
pressing the playback/review button, I don't even have to depress the shutter button. When I press the playback button, it
will not display the last shot taken and it just locks up until I move focus ring or wait for about 10 seconds. Still
mindboggling considering it happens with any lens or memory card and I'm on my second body with the same issue. It's
going back to Canon.

Ok so Ive isolated the issue to only occur when I hit the play button to review my shot - when I press it, the camera locks
up which makes me think my two memory cards are faulty. I did have a card reader which recently died on me and when
I inspected it, it had a couple of bent prongs. I'm hoping this is the issue because it's making me mental. I'm off to buy a new
memory card.

Yes although not on my nifty fifty but I haven't used it much on the 5D.
-

I have the last firmware update. Thanks though.

-

I've tried my nifty fifty a few times and it hasn't happened but I haven't shot enough with it to make sure it's an issue with both my 135 and 50 Sigma.
I have standard noise reduction on and I don't have long exposure noise reduction activated.

Thanks Ken - appreciate it!

Ken, that's my strategy for this weekened actually altough I am not sure it's a valid conclusion to believe the Sigma "contaminates" my 5D but it's worth a shot at this point.

My camera randomly locks up/freezes after taking shots (I normally shoot in aperture mode but it happens in manual mode as well). It simply becomes unresponsive. It’s not the shutter freezing as the shutter has closed when this happens. I realize it has locked up when I press the play button to review my shot or when I attempt to press the shutter for another shot – nothing happens. The freeze/lock is only interrupted by me moving the focus ring on my lens or by waiting for 5-10 seconds and moving the lens around. I even had the camera body replaced by the seller - which means I can eliminate the body as the issue. Having worked in tech support previously and realize the logic of deduction in troubleshooting, I am unable to reproduce it consistently - it's completely random. It can happen several times a day, or it doesn't happen for a day or two. The issue occurs regardless of memory card or lens. I have been using fast UDMA (lexar, sandisk) memory cards and two different lenses (Canon 135L & Sigma 50). Although I tend to shoot more indoors, the issue occurs indoors in low light as well as outdoors in day light. The problem also occurred with any focus distance - it has occurred at 3 meters as well as 20-30 meters. I don't have anything attached like a battery pack or flash. Memory cards, battery and lenses are the only variables. Any ideas? I've seen some users experiencing similar issues:

Canon says they'd be happy to take a look at it but given that my camera body was replaced and I'm still experiencing this issue, I don't see how they can solve it.

Thanks Craig - that makes sense. Since I shoot in a pretty controlled environment, I see no reason to use filters. To each his own I guess.

-

Thanks all!

-

Oh no, they didn't. I am somewhat new to photography and I was just curious if there are additional benefits other than protecting the lens since every single photographer I have run into have encouraged me to get filters on my lenses. It just didn't make sense to me personally since they are protected through insurance.

-

Puppyface, I did. I found nothing regarding the insurance option which prompted my inquiry. Reading/posting are actions of free will. Just ignore it if bothers you so much.

-

I suggest not reading/posting if you don't care for the discussion.

Thanks to all others for your input.

So I am often told to put a filter on my lenses for protection. I don't get it. Why put a $70 filter on a lens that's over a grand (I have the 35L & 135L)? For protection I've added my lenses plus my 5D mk2 for 30 bucks to my home owners insurance and they are covered with no deductible in case of loss or breakage. It seems as though a filter can hardly ADD to the IQ, right? Wise ones, fill me in pls.

My vision is fine - I'm a competitive target shooter. As I stated earlier, the Canon 1.8 focused just fine after more controlled focused test. The Sigma also did well from 2.5 meters but required additional adjustment when increasing the distance.

-

No Philip, I don't. I just need to learn how to handle the speed when shooting wide open.

Dave, I'd say about 3-40% are keepers with the Sigma (sharp enough to post process).

-

Ok so I am pretty confident there's no focus issue. I don't believe my previous test was done correctly - although I did use a tripod, lighting was all over the place, too short of a distance (1.5 meters) and camera and object weren't lined up. This time I used a tripod, good lighting, perfect alignement and 2.5 meter distance. Wide open, the Canon did surprisingly well and there was little difference from manual focus (using live view) and autofocus - I could actually barely tell which one was manually focused. The Sigma did much better after a microadjustment of +17. It was decent at 1.4 and at 1.8 sharpness was about the same as the Canon. The Sigma required a lesser micro adjustment as I increased the distance. At 5 meters, it was sharpest with no microadjustment. This is consistent with a lot of Sigmas apparently. The Sigma got dramatically sharper at 2.2 - 2.6. As expected, both lenses were very sharp at 5.6.
So in sum, this was most likely user error and a dose of Sigma QC. As many of you pointed out, the shallow depth of field takes some getting used to and shooting wide open definitely reduce the keeper rate. The Sigma was by no means terrible but it should beat the nifty fifty at 1.8 for 5 times the cost, bokeh and construction aside. I may give it another shot.
Thank you for everyones feedback.

JDM, no reason to be subtle, I'm looking for constructive feedback which is effective when given direct and to the point. You can feel entirely confident that I know what a focus point is...I was referring to viewing focus points in DPP. I wasn't aware of the functionality.

-

Btw, JDM, if you think you know what the issue is, please do share.

-

I honestly couldn't care less if it said L or Z on my lens; I'm just looking for consistent output. I'm going to run another test.

-

No, I haven't. That's good advice. I can pick the 35 2.0 at B&H and return it for the L if I fall in love with the view.
