    White Pocket

          6

Thanks Pierre, Slavomir, and Wanghan.  This is one of my favorites of the White Pocket area mainly because the lighting was so dramatic.  Wanghan, I thought you had already been to White Pocket?  If I remember correctly you posted a number of really nice images of Lollipop Rock with a nice pool of water to catch its reflection.  Take care everyone.

  1. Thanks Stephen.  It has taken me a while to get comfortable with those luminosity masks, and layers in Photoshop, but I feel you have much more control of an image compared to Lightroom, especially for the subtle tweaks in light and shadows.  Thanks for your comments, Stephen.  You know how much I value your perspective.  Take care my friend.

  2. Thanks for your comments, Jim.  I am trying to stay away from HDR if I can.  I like the idea of using luminosity masks instead.  They keep colours more natural than HDR, and things look as they should.  Take care.

  3. A shot taken while visiting Yosemite. We stayed at Glacier View Point that

evening and got to see some wonderful stars. A fairly large group of

astronomers with large telescopes set up there as well. I would have looked

through a telescope had I not been absorbed by what I was seeing happen to

Half Dome as the sun went down. This is a composite of three images

    blended in Photoshop.

  4. I forgot to mention that I stitched 4 vertical exposures together in Photoshop CS5, and then made tonal adjustments in Lightroom 3.  You must look at the large version to appreciate the details in this one.

  5. Hi Trey.  Thanks for your comments.  I actually took this shot at about 9 am.  You are right, though, about this shot not being as good as it could have been.  Well, I guess that means I will have to go back sometime!  LOL!  Take care.

  6. Hi Larry.  Thanks for stopping by and commenting on this one.  This is my best of the bunch, and when I go back I will be armed with a 100-400 L series lens.  I borrowed one from a lady who was also shooting with Canon gear, and it really made a difference in getting in close enough so you could distinguish details such as farm houses etc.  In this shot I had hiked down closer to the fields because I had to give the long lens back tot the lady, and revert to my 70-200, and on my 5D MK ii this lens is not that long.  I decided to crop a little to bring in the details more.  Take care my friend.

  7. Thanks everyone for your comments.  Jerry, I thought about doing this but I found that isolating smaller areas had more impact in the Palouse area.  You must remember that I was quite a ways up on Steptoe Butte when I shot this image.  Maybe I will try panorama when I go back, because i am definitely going back!  All the best.

I agree that southern Utah is amazing, and I really want to go back sometime.  I am looking at this image on my calibrated NEC screen, and to me the contrast is fine.  I will try making a print, and then go from there.  Thanks so much for your input, Larry.  I appreciate feedback whenever I get it.  It makes me stop and think, and reevaluate.  Take care.

A variation on an earlier image. This was taken at the end of the Grand

Overlook Viewpoint in Canyonlands National Park. The view in any

direction was amazing. Let me know what you think of the processing on

this one, as well as the composition.

Thanks Jukka and Christal.  Every time I visit my mother i keep wondering if it will be the last time as she is really slowing down.  Yet, she has always had a lot of energy, and attitude so one never knows!  Thanks so much for stopping by.
