I use Aperture on an iMac. It's crop tool offers a range of different aspect ratios, and when you "pull the handle" across the screen to start the crop process, the Aperture image screen appears very similar to the PSE example that Michael posted above. Since Ken mentioned cropping "just a bit", I'm wondering whether he uses the "unconstrained" or the "custom" crop options; then when his printing service gets the file they use one of the standard aspect ratios.

Free enterprise, a beautiful thing -- the seller sets its price at wherever level it pleases (subject to regulatory limits); the buyer is free to purchase at that price or buy from another seller or not buy at all. Especially with non-essential goods, I don't see an unfair advantage on either side. Or in terms of what mom and dad taught us, "We make our decisions freely and accept the consequences."

Larry,
Forget the camera, the lens, and the tripod -- just tell us the general vicinity of the "crime scene", where the light and landscape were so captivating, that you were moved to toss $4000 of gear over the edge. :)
P.S. If it's any consolation, I liked your writing style that described your slow-motion horror.

Hello again, and thank you for the comments and observations. To force myself to look at things with a different composition, during editing I will sometimes rotate photos horizontally, and if it doesn't make a critical difference, I'll sometimes leave the edited version that way. Thank you again.

Looking at photos I took from a recent backpack trip, I was startled to notice that I have a composition "bias" -- in other words, if I place an object in the foreground it is almost always on the LEFT side; a diagonal almost always runs LEFT to right; curves start on the LEFT then run right; higher objects are almost always place on the LEFT; people are almost always on the LEFT. I went back and looked at photos from other shoots and noticed (to my horror!) the same tendency.
Is there a specific term for this? Is this something linked to whether one is right- or left handed? Is this a common tendency?
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Several times I've come across references to the "book review" section -- I assumed (maybe erroneously) that the writers were referring to "book reviews" on the PN site. Several times I've searched the home page and each of the menus, to no avail.
Is there in fact a book review section on PN?
Thank you
