i've shared a bit of my recent shooting, but i haven't been entirely pleased
with it. too many shots seemed like the pictures of others.

to set matters straight, during the past few days, i tried capture the classic
sort of thing i do, which tends to isolate subjects and look for complexity in
texture as opposed to large-scale arrangements of items. in spite of falling off
my bike twice (we still have ice patches here), i think i am happy again - here
is the set...

(note: as usual, all through SMC 50mm f/1.4 manual lens)

i'd be interested in seeing some of your "core" stuff.
cheers.

thanks for the nice words. the fact that i use this lens 99% of the time on my pentax makes it easy to isolate the pictures ;-)
as for exhibiting/publishing. i did show for a year and did very well in terms of earnings and awards. the big problem for me was clients wanting me to articulate (not in pictures but conversation) some kind of transcendent meaning. there is plenty of meaning for me, but things will always be hit and miss for the viewer. in the end, it seemed best to just shoot for myself and earn a living by other means.
as for bokeh, i also shoot canon and leica (film SLR) and the pentax is right there with (if not slightly ahead of) the canon 50 f/1.4 (which i own), but a hair below the level of a 50mm summicron R. nothing can touch leica in this regard.

Nice shots Vuk. Is that the FA 50mm f/1.4? If so, I have the same lens and I love it.

actually, i only use manual lenses. it's the SMC M.

i only have direct experience with an M6 and there is no issue/difficulty with it. you may want to ask on the leica forum about things like an M2 and M3.

i admire your attitude and have been know to have a go at collector/fondler type who definitely are not worthy.

the strategy is to get a leica body, but put voightlander lenses on it until OR if you feel the need to switch over. i often use a jupiter 8 (50mm) on my m6 and that came on the zorki for $25. one of the sharpest lenses i have used...

even within leica there are deals on glass that the idiots devalue because it was made in canada or came with the CL, etc. keep an eye out for the 40mm summicron and 90mm tele-elmarit. the fondlers/collectors all hate the tele-elmarit and they have the numbers/theories to prove it but i have stuff like this to show:

i would actually advise a second-hand leica body. the bessas are pretty shoddy by comparison.

you've just reminded me to develop some film that's been lying around for a year! in the meantime, this is all i can offer:

i have emailed benjamin and will await a reply.

the camera is a bessa L. my original intent was merely to purchase the 28mm skopar (mounted on it in pic) to use on my leica m6, but then i noticed the L bodies cost less than a leica rear lens cap, yet could hold, film, take pictures, etc.

the picture i have in mind features a young, fashionably-dressed woman eating a
sausage or hot-dog, standing inside a dark little diner/bar while a fat, german
cook stares at her from behind the counter. i hope i got this right or i'll be
in for some teasing if it turns out my dirty mind has fabricated a few things.
anyhow, the help would be appreciated. cheers!

well, i don't need no stinkin' double exposure! here's another little experiment (shot this afternoon)...

btw--to do this sort of thing on film requires being a millionaire.
-
thanks randy. that seems straightforward. the last time i had to deal with menus on the camera was to set it to work with fully manual lenses, which is all i use.
re: 935915
adam, glad you like it. my fav is "the next mozart".

ellis.
are you saying i need to buy yet another camera system? ;-)
vuk.
-
i've been messing around again with some long shutter speeds and deliberate
camera shake (see links below for examples) and i'd like to incorporate some
double exposures. first off, is it possible with an istDS2, second, how? i'd
rather avoid photoshopping, which never looks right with this sort of stuff.

first off, it's not clear to me why you would want to take/keep a terrible picture like that. second, i agree with the comments abocve that there are many possible targets for the AF sensor to pick out.
btw--i only use manual focus with my cameras: you want to give it a try.
-
are you saying that i am banal in my photographic judgment? bokeh is a primary concern for me when evaluating/selecting a lens and the effects are not only present in obvious "isolation" situations.
vuk.

My comment on the above photo is that it should not have been shown to the public at all. It is not a usable shot. The focal length is not suitable for this type of shots.--nee sung

this comment is absurd. sure, the picture could have been better composed, but it is the atrocious bokeh that ruins it above all else. according to the author, i should never have attempted to shoot this pic: http://www.qstatistic.com/foto/g08/Duckie.htm

when i reviewed the pentax *istDS a couple of winters ago, i had a chance to play around with the 43mm limited and i thought the lens was fantastic. delicate and crisp in its renderings with very leica-like luminescence. the only weak spot was a rather unconventional bokeh that may not work for some in certain situations.

the smc 50mm f/1.4 has been my work-horse and favourite since then, but i think it is being overtaken by the 30mm f/2.8. this is large part because the 30mm is like a 50mm on my DSLR and that's the focal length what i prefer to shoot about 80% of the time. here are some results from it from the past week:

http://vukfoto.com/exhib/last_gasp/

as for non-pentax brands: 40mm summicron M, 90mm summicron M, 50mm summicron R, canon FD 50mm f/1.4 are the favourites. btw--i only shoot primes!

hey jim, do you have any shots that illustrate the bokeh that pancake lens produces?

i really like your picture of the small clump of evergreen trees in valley reflected on very still water. can't link to shot because of flash (?) website, but it's the one on the very front page (top right under "sample works" title).
