1.
John,
some years ago, I had the Sigma 24/f2.8 AF lens and as much as I can remember it produced photos I really liked. One advantage over the current Nikkor 24/f2.8 is that it focusses much, much closer than Nikon's version (very positive). One the other hand, it was a terrible noisy lens - do not think about using it secretly!!! The Sigma came also with its own lens hood which is very useful.

 2.
For whatever it is worth: For demanding beginners Still before photokina, Nikon presents a entry level camera, which compares well with considerable more expensive cameras in terms of functionality and image quality. Foto Digital has had the opportunity to perform some quick tests during the presentation of the D3100. Not much information in this screen shot :-)

 3.
Hi, another optio could also be the Voigtländer 58mm f1.4. It is a mannual lens but it is also chipped for full automatic exposure control by your camera, if desired. It would make a nice portrait lens on your camera. I like mine on a FX camera. Easy to focus manually, nice overall picture quality.

 4.
Check the illumination pattern of you flash - I once had the same problem (zoom only o 135 mm) and the solution was to set the pattern to a different setting (don't remember anymore which ...).
