    Yes, Pnina,

I've come to love these store window/inside-outside photos. I notice I am always on the "look-out" for them.

Looking forward to spending time with you on a future visit. It was fun despite the car.

  1. thanks, it pays to check it out.

we were on a self-guided walking tour, ended up there.

they are doing renovations, and the guy in charge was eager to show it off.

i magine that with a tripod and time, one could do some very nice work there.

  2. thanks so much. i still feel the morning i was out there. a fellow in one of the better photo places in nyc suggested cropping the usual 2x3 aspect to something like a 5x9 aspect. his suggestion made a tremendous difference.

    best regards.

  3. This headstone is in the Museum of the old Jewish Quarter in Girona, Spain. The stones were moved there from the old Jewish cemetery and presented in a photographic display of their location in situ in the cemetery.

The stone itself is that of a child. The translation reads as "Here lies (that's the abbreviation in the top right hand corner) the sweet one, a child of delights, Joseph ..." The idiom "a child of delights" is from Jeremiah 31:19. The headstone does not seem to be of any recent vintage. Then it would have to pre-date 1492, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain.

I converted to monchrome and digitally "burnt" the lettering, so that the inscription would stand out clearly.

  4. Hi, Amanda,

Just saw your critique last week.

After reading your remarks, I went back to a print and to the file that generated it. Apparently, I, too was bothered by the top left corner. I cropped from the top, but just not as much as you. I think I wanted the photo more open, with a bit more depth.

Here is what I did. It is sort of between my original and your suggestion. Thanks for the trouble and the constructive remarks.

    Best regards.

"Gil Evans, Dave Brubeck, Art Pepper, birth of the cool...this photograph transports me back to a time when Jazz, with a capital J"

Doug, you know why it took you back? It was the eyeglasses. sax and eyeglasses instinctively remind of paul Desmond, until you look at the guy more closely and you think Gerry Mulligan.

Beautiful light. Spent a couple days in the hills around Asciano, in the Summer 2001. The sunsets weren't necessarily dramatic --- just exquisite.

    Appreciate the reminder.

    Venice

Different view. Fresh composition, since most shots are out of the plaza.

Have to decide, though, on the different shades between near and far. Normally, that can be very desirable. But here, the Palladian architecture is the main object, and its shading is the weaker of the two (near vs. far).

  5. In June 2001, we were in Ferrara. Arrived on a Sunday afternoon. After "siesta," the city is out strolling in this square. Right in front of the building you photographed there are 4 or 5 white-haired gentlemen, dressed neat as pins, one with a bike, just standing and chatting. They held themselves with exceptional ease and assurance, and shared what seemed the friendship of many years. I snapped a photo. Next morning, at 10.30 AM they are back out there. Just the same.

I saw your thumbnail and immediately said to myself "Ferrara." When I opened it up, my guess was confirmed. I just looked in my album, and it is same spot. Except your picture is at #79, and mine is at #65. But same building/windows.

And I think the same guy! --- except in my picture his back is 3/4 away from the camera, though the body itself and the head seemed to be the guy!

I wish I had a scanner! By they way, the composition is very nice.

Pay no attention to them. You will learn the most, and know of other's appreciation, from the remarks. A beautiful picture. The people who commented appreciated it and took the time to say so. That is what counts.

    Best regards.

The problem is with the title. The balance of the shadowed stone texture on the right giving way to the lighted human form on the left is very pleasing. But the title is not what the picture is about.
