Just saw this comment from you Charles - P.S. I'm not trying to be rude but you are going to have to improve your spelling/typing skills to be a 'professional' at anything.
Typing is the least of my concerns. Especially since I'm simply posting on a forum. Your comment actually was rude, completely unnecessary and irrelevant.

Hello!
Wondering if there are any Canadians on here tha may know of any good workshops (preferablly wedding photog ones but anything really) in Ontario specifically?

Wow you guys are awesome! Thanks for all of the feedback. Very valid concerns Matthew. I actually have an education in Marketing and PR and extensive work background to "fall back". Phootgraphy is a hobby that I would like to, hope to, grow into a career. My daughter is off to university next year and I'm single so I have all the time in the world to devote to this and "me"! Not looking to make a killing at all, just really enjoy it (so far) and would like to be able to do it as my profession.
Again, thanks for all of the input guys. I think I just got overly excited because I'm enjoying this (photog) so much. Based on all of the response, I've got a VERY clear direction that I need to step back, slow down and just learn/grow..got it :)
I'm excited about my classes starting next month and I'm going to grab a copy of Light: Science and Magic tomorrow (I'm REALLY interested in understanding light better)
I'm so glad I joing this forum. I've joined others and in just a matter of days this has been the most helpful and suportive.

Just saw your post Greg, thanks! I'll hold off on the registration and just create an overview of where I want go. I'll make sure to do it in pencil ;-)

I've had my camera for about 8 months now. I've been shooting and reading on my own but my actual college classes start next month. I didn't decide to take the classes untill now because I didn't really want to put any money into this unless I knew I loved it..and I do!
I'm the kind of person who likes to have a plan and direction to work toward, if plans change, I adjust. Right now, my plan is to do this as a business. I'm fortunate that I will be living in a major tourist and destination wedding locale and my personal expenses will be VERY low so I will have the liberty to pull all of my eggs into this basket (so to speak)
I hear you though Charles. I don't want to make this a cumbersome experience..I want to enjoy it. I will be taking my classes, doing seminars, meet-ups etc but in the meantime I need to have a big picture I'm going toward so I'll create the GANT but again, based on my big picture, do I at least register the business and the business bank account now(education, equipment etc) and then focus on the learning and growing?

I know I have custimer service skills, and I can get gear over time (Although I'd like to have good gear to "practice" on). What I'm missing is the 75%; artistic/craft ability. I'm such a planner that its hard to just focus on learning and not do some business planning! The GANT chart looks lie a good idea..I guess just an overview of where I wnat to go.
Do I at leass register the business and the business bank account now though (education, equipment etc)?

I think I may have jumped the gun and now atrting to feel overwhelmed.
I know that in approx 2 years I want to open up for business. In that time I want to get my equipment ann learn as much as possible. But I've already started planning the structure of my business, sourcing contracts, starting my business plan etc, etc...Am I jumping the gun considering I JUST got my DSLR and I'm a total novice! Or do you think I should be considerign thsoe things now?
I was planning to register my business this weekend because I will be buying equipment, books and taking classes. Is this jumping the gun as well?

THanks for the responses. I was also wondering if it makes sense to set up a mini studio in my home to play with lighting? Also wnat to add that I will be living in the tropics in a popular wedding destination so most shoots will be outdoors.

If i'm ready (in terms of skill), I start doing weddings..If not I continue to learn. Onj the flip side if I'm ready before that I will open up shop. I understand how important that day is to a couple and I have no intentions on messing it up :)

Just an added note: any advise that can be offered on building my skills and knowledge over the coming years would be great. Thank you!

Hello All - I am somewhat new to photography and very interested in doing weddings once the time is right. Right now I'm giving myself about a 2 year timeline to learn as much as possible. I wanted to know if any of you have suggestions on books I can read that really cover lighting, color cast. using ambient light ..things like that.

Am I putting the cart before the horse?
