I'd like to own a digital camera closest to the M3 I use (because I take mostly photos of my kids and don't print, wife wants to see photos :)

could use a SLR, but want a optical finder

want the 0.9 mag. and keep both eyes open

use only 50mm (currently rigid Summicron)

I like the knob focus and wonder why all lenses don't have them

I'm picky. The M3 is perfect. I would look at a M9 or M-E, but the smaller magnification on the finder worries me. Is using a magnifier a workable solution?

-

I am using a M3 with a rigid summicron 50mm for the past year and keep both eyes open (earlier with SLRs I was a left eye shooter, but now am comfortable using right eye on M3). I'd like to know if keeping both eyes open is still possible with the 0.86 viewfinder magnification bodies.

-

I would look into a Leica M3 if you are mostly a 50mm shooter and a large finder even at the price. I think there is still no camera quite like it if you want to stick to 50mm.

-

Last year, I chased the same problem on a M3 and realized that my Nikon coolscan V loader was causing the problem after 10 rolls. Check the negs on a lightbox before and after scanning with a loupe.

I want to know if the photo would look different due to the lens design (with the smaller sensor, is lesser area of the lens used?) I guess if I found the same photo taken with these combos, it would be reassuring. I rented a M8.2 35mm Summilux for a weekend and here are links to a couple of shots with the subject close and away. I'm not sure if they show any 35mm lens characteristics (curving?) and/or if they would look identical with a M9/50mm.
http://flickr.com/gp/vineet/4q21b9
http://flickr.com/gp/vineet/L1080Z

I'm ok with the smaller sensor and lesser light (for the price tradeoff), but if you took the same picture with a M9 Summicron 50mm combo, would there be lesser distortion, especially on a closer subject? It'd be great if I could see a comparison.
thanks!

Thanks a lot for the responses! I'll try teaching him to hold right-handed and see how it goes. Of course, getting him to look in the viewfinder and pay attention to what's going on in there might be the real challenge.

-

I want to teach my 4 yr old how to hold a camera. He is left-handed and I am right. Should I just show him how I hold (left hand under lens, right hand finger on shutter release), or hold under lens with his right hand and reach over camera with left hand or try to buy him a camera with shutter release on left side?
thanks!

Thank you for all the critiques and comments, especially David. I'll certainly look into learning a photo editor.

Thanks for the comments. These were from a 4 day trip to San Diego with my wife and 2 year old son. #1 is La Jolla beach, #4 is Torrey Pines State Reserve and #5 is at Coronado beach. We stayed on Pacific beach where #2,3,6 are taken. #6 has the Crystal Pier hotel in the left. San Diego is a very nice place!

I was shooting on the go, while sight-seeing (which is pretty much how my photography is) and could hardly decide the time of being somewhere based on light. My intention is to record as I see (hence the proportions).

The camera is a Nikon D70, imaging set to raw. #4 is with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens, all others are with Nikon 28mm f2.8 lens. I didn't do any processing. Mostly I shoot aperture priority or manual exposure after spot metering my palm with the camera.

David, #3 was dusk. I took a shot as the surfer just went past, but I underexposed it too much, because I had taken a previous shot of the sun. By the time I compensated, he had walked that far!

Bob, I'd like to know the lens you use for the available light portraits. Why doesn't the exif
data on Flickr show the f-stop?

Thanks for the responses. I mentioned tri-x because that's the only black & white film I've
used and only a few rolls at that. I was just trying to get what looked like decent b&w to me
and arrived at these steps after several attempts. The picture is of my two week old son. I
find myself shooting indoors available light at ISO 1600 most of the time.
-
I was looking for simple color to b&w conversion techniques, eventually played around in iphoto6 (mac os
x) and this flow seems to work for me after trying for some time, so thought I'd share.

Top: Initial shot in incandescent indoor light (Nikon D70, 35mm nikkor lens, 1/60s, f2, ISO1600)
Middle: Straight conversion to black and white has poor contrast
Bottom: Instead, bring up adjust box, decrease saturation to mimimum, click enhance photo button(auto
levels?) and check results, then adjust highlights and lowlights by shrinking histogram on both sides for a
look closer to tri-x
Steve, I like your photo.
-
Travis, I like the 6th one of the waterfront with the people in the corner. Interesting
photographs. Thanks for sharing.
-
Matt, I like the first one, the composition leads to her.
