1. Disaster! The little tab contact in the bottom of the battery chamber in my SL has broken off. Looks like there is some corrosion. I’m going to have to go in to effect a repair of some sort. Anyone have any advice ( other than don’t do it) for getting into the base of the camera? On the face of it, it looks straightforward with two recessed screws, but I thought I’d ask the question before diving in just in case there is some tiny spring or cog that pings out when you remove the base?

    THanks

We’re you able to resolve this? I just acquired an SL this morning with the same issue.

  2.
I shoot regularly with digital and film SLRs, but am right now in the market for a P&S for my 7 year old son. His current Nikon Coolpix bit the dust - he was trying to photograph the pond up close by floating the camera in a boat, and the water got the best of it. Although only 7, my son is quite adept at the controls and handles them easily. Contrary to the pond experience, he is actually quite careful with equipment, this was an odd occurrence. I do commend him for his originality, even at the cost of the camera. I use his camera sometimes when caught without mine and for the fun of it. All that to say I prefer to get him something with decent quality. He also regularly uses the movie function.
I am a Nikon person for my SLRs, which is why I got him the Coopix about 2 years ago, and had done no research on it. A bit of internet searching and I'm seeing that Nikons aren't so highly rated for their P&S cameras. I'm looking for recommendations for something under $200. Would you go Canon instead of Nikon? Any other brands? Anything to stay away from?
Thanks in advance.

  3.
After shooting b&w film for years and developing and printing in my home darkroom, I've been shooting digital since my son was born. I'm a single mother and getting into the darkroom is currently not an option. I'm progressing slowly in the digital work too, due to time constraints, but I'm happy to be shooting, and as he grows older I'll have more time.

I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to print my b&w film negatives and digital images, and also need some information on learning Photoshop b&w conversion. I love the texture and depth of traditional fiber based prints.

For digital: I'm a beginner with Photoshop, and am looking for some good tutorials on b&w conversion in PS. Also, what are the best options for printing (see also next question)?

For film: I have a number of good negatives I'm interested in printing, that I didn't get to before my son arrived. Does it make sense (given time constraints) to have the negatives scanned, work them in PS, then send them out to be printed? I understand there are traditional printing methods available for digital negatives - where can I find a primer on how that works? Any suggestions on quality labs?

Thanks in advance for your help!
