Thanks John. I currrently only have it set for JPEG but may set for both relatively soon and play with some of the RAW images. Thanks so much for your input :)

Thanks for the comments Jim :)

Yes, I was really hoping for a decent angle for some of the bitework during that session. It was early afternoon and overall a hot, bright day, so I was quite happy that the catch ended up exactly as it did.

Schutzhund is a wonderful sport - putting a sleeve on for a bite is quite the rush, not to mention addicting! I am quite sure that rottie was thinking exactly that ;)

Pierre, I too had wondered if the colors were too much. I had my WB set on shade and I do find the "warming" effect comes on a bit too strong with this setting. It is certainly something to keep working at, both while shooting and in post-processing.

Scott, thanks so much. I admire your dog photos very much (still recall viewing and absolutely love the chess one), so your feedback is greatly appreciated. Also good to know your thoughts on RAW - over the last year I keep wondering if I have missed the boat with many of the shots I've taken once working on them after the fact. With the D300S I suppose I should throw my CF card in there and give RAW a try but I just haven't done it yet ;). Also very good to know about saving in TIFF after! Had not thought about that - will certainly add that to my "things to do" list. Thanks :)

Jim, Mike, and John, thanks so much for all your valuable critiques. I agree with all the comments completely now that they have been pointed out - love getting this feedback!

I've taken the suggestions and made a few changes. Not sure if I can attach the revised photo with this post but I will give it a try as I would like to see if I'm heading in the right direction.

And Mike, so very true about RAW. I will admit I have not felt quite "brave enough" to start working in RAW as my knowledge of it is limited although I most certainly will...soon!

Thanks again everyone for your taking the time to post your insights :)

    Wood Walk

Thanks Mike - I was really quite happy with this impromptu shot. This dear friend of mine asked for a few photos of her dogs. While finding a place to set the hounds up, I snapped this one as we were walking down the trail.

  1. Thanks Mike! It was very much one of those "just for fun" shots. Yes, I am a Nikon fan - still in the early learning phases with digital (and photography in general) but havng a great time as I plug through :)

Carlo, I really like this photo very much - I think the B&W lends itself very well to this shot. I personally would like to perhaps see more blur of the background, as I find the statue to the right competes somewhat with the main focal point (the dog). I also find the pant wrinkles to be distracting. Other than that, I think this is a great photo!

    Memorial Stone 1

Very touching. I prefer this one over the other one posted. I'm not sure if it is just noise, but wonder if the memorial stone would have more "pop" to it if it was quickly polished prior to taking the shot. Also, perhaps a bit more of a crop at the top of the photo. The color is very nice. Well done Leon.

What a fun photo! Very nice. I think I would like to see the entire body length of the sheepdog in the frame as well. Thanks for sharing this - it brings a smile to my face.

  2. Scott, as always, I thoroughly enjoy your fabulous dog photos. I agree it is too bad the tail was not in the frame but this is a great one nevertheless - great job on getting both critters in focus!

Thanks very much for your insights - taking notes as I am planning to set this up again for another attempt.  This dog is a pure joy to photograph and he really is a lovely boy.

Critiques greatly appreciated. Some obvious ones I am thinking about

include more crop on right, less on left, and removing the branches

under the chest - what else would help to improve this for a similar shot

    in the future?

    so close...

Lauren, I am far from an expert by any means at all so I usually don't contribute critiques because of this ;) but I quite like this photo, particularly the expression. I wonder if a bit of cropping on either side (to eliminate the shadow on the left and the cushion on the right) might help draw the eye to the dog's eye some more?  Cheers for now.
