    Pigmy seahorse

Great Shot! Nice coloring and good composition. I have seen so many pictures where uw photogs have over saturated the pink coloring in the seahorse. This is a very hard shot to get. I have several images of these miniature seahorses on my trip to Bali and Lembeh last November, 2010. These little guys are so difficult to see that you actually need someone to point them out while looking through a macro lens, and even then you have to search to finally see one. I can't believe anyone would rate this 3, this is definitely 10.

A nice shot, and the added black and white definitely gives a better dimension. The eye of the ray is tack sharp and in a good compositional position. However, a direct on shot or a shifting sand shot would have been more dynamic. I would have done a tighter crop by moving in on the ray mainly to get rid of the rocks in the background.

  1. I visualized Tim's photo, Dog walker at sunrise, without the walker and dog, and liked it even better. When I first saw this photo, I immediately thought WOW. My eyes were drawn to the silhouette of the trees, the haunting shapes of the trees backlit against a dusky yellow background, finishing with a sun rising in the bottom quadrant of the photo. IMO the trees are the subject. The tiny figures of dog and walker get lost in the drama of the colorful sunrise and intrigue shapes of the trees, two of the elements that make a great photo. It shouts out peaceful silence on a cool morning. All we need is the mist rolling in . . .
After reading several of the comments, but not all, it is safe to say that photography is subjective.
Note: I did not like the cropped or monochrome version of Tim's photo. I would have been nice if the taller tree had not been cropped off.

  2. Excellent subject with loads of color. I have to say that the one thing that stands out on this photo is the lighting. It is hard to tell if the eyes are tack sharp but even so the eyes have a nice sharpness fanning out from the body.

The composition is nice. It looks like the eyes are NOT directly in the middle which makes for a pleasing shot for the viewer.
