A great capture Gillie, a very care-free moment.  I really enjoy the lighting, expression and overall feel. Great sharpness at full size BTW.

Marvin, saw this up for critique which led me to your gallery.  A great capture of the horse mid-stride with nice details, well done.  Truth be told, I prefer your very skilled (but few) panning shots showing that sense of speed.  Thanks for sharing.

    Regards, James

I don't mind the lighting at all and think you handled the glasses well so as not to allow distortion or glare from your lights.  I do find that the few highlights on the left glasses lens and just above the one eye (as we look at him) to be a touch distracting; dust maybe?.  Overall, I quite like it.

Frank, I would agree to the suggested colour corrections made by Greg and of course crop is to personal taste.  My one wish is that the eyes stood out more instead of my attention being drawn first to the teeth.  A nice catchlight I think really helps enhance beautiful portraits like this.

    Regards, James.

  1. Nice even lighting and control of any hotspots from the glasses or on the forehead.  Crisp background and well balanced skin tones.  Overall well done,  not sure if there would be anything I would change.

    Regards, James.

Jordan, I actually noticed this earlier in the week but didn't have time to comment.  It stuck with me and I remembered to come back to your page which is saying something given my memory these days.  I am very impressed with the whole tone of the image and what you have created.  Congrats and best wishes.

Wioletta, very beautiful composition and colour.  I visited your portfolio due to this image and was very impressed.  The only possible critique which I could point out is the somewhat distracting area on her left wrist (air bubble?).  Just my humble opinion.  Again, great image, best regards.

Thank you all.  Claude + Jan, I can see your point on the contrast but was a little concerned about how dark the image would be and how detail would show through.

This is a hollow tower located in a botanical garden near where I live, the scale is quite deceiving.  I like the jail idea though!.

  2. Pekka - Very nice aerial shot.  I really like the colors you picked up from the lights (I'm guessing sunset and big spot light from the hill)  Personally I would like to see a little more focus on the boarder by maybe cropping out a bit more of the snow along the bottom but that's just me.

    Best regards, James

  3. Thomas, I love chrome and catching light off of the details - you've got a neat project going.  I do really like these sorts of shots rather than trying to cram the standard sight-lines of a car into a photo.  Not sure if I would have chosen to hold the color in the emblem but that's personal preference.

Keep up the good work.  James

I really like the mood of the photo (lighting, haze, muted colors...)  I would prefer to either see a bit more detail in left hand tree or less of it as a framing component; but that's just my 2 cents.  Keep up the good work.

Gareth - great series of rally shots (I checked them all out).  You are really capturing the whole feel of rally here.  I do think that some of your other pix are sharper with somewhat better color but that could be the dust in the air I'm seeing.  Your composition and angles are spot on.

    Best regards, James.

I like it - subtle, nice tones and (for me) great subject.  It looks like you may have done some burning-in around the edges, not sure if it would really be needed.

    All the best, James

  4. Frank, great timing for this shot.  I think the natural lighting was working a bit against you - putting the face and body into shadows.  Fill light will help as already stated (just not easy at sports events).  For my preference - much less DoF would have isolated her and blurred out the the distracting backdrop.

Some nice work Tyson.  I haven't tried any layered techniques like this but like the final product you have.  Sharp all the way through and nice light.

    Keep it up - James
