  1. This is an intriguing image because of the way the light and dark areas create a composition. The negative space between the heads becomes an element. I want to increase the shadow detail for some texture on the shoulders of the nearest animal, and some detail in the face of the one behind. I find the right and left edges of the frame distracting on the left, and uninteresting on the right. A square crop would make for more impact. That eye is wonderful, and brings it all together. An excellent grab shot!

    Cyclist and Friend

Light objects stand out, so in this photo my eye is drawn to the bold white graphic on the cyclist's legs and rump. There are some repeating verticals in the railing, the post, and the building columns, and bold stripes on the helmet. Finally, I notice the dog (looks like a fox, but I assume they are too feral to ride around in a backpack.) My guess is that that is your subject, but it doesn't stand out. It's small and dark. If you wanted that dog to grab the viewer's attention, I would get much closer and perhaps shoot with a wide angle lens. Put the dog in the viewer's face. Fill your frame with the subject.

  2. Steve,

I looked at this image, and felt it had obvious technical problems, (subject is overexposed and not in focus) so I looked at the rest of your photos on Photo.net, and they are quite good, with no technical issues. A bright subject in a dark field will inevitably be overexposed if autoexposure is used. Typical issue with stage performers. I find it hard to read the composition, really kind of jumbled.  Subject's posture and expression I find ambiguous. It has a general "I used a Holga, so it must be art" look. I'm curious what you see here, especially given the higher level of the rest of your images.

Sometimes a photograph is richly symbolic. Here we have innocence and technology. The sphere suggest the World, too, which we discover as children (and hopefully, go on discovering.) I want to run around and take this shot from the front with her face. Nevertheless, a magic moment.
  3. I love the tonalities in the buildings, in contrast to the clean ice. And the contrast between the moving figures and static buildings. How large a print have you made of this? I'm thinking it could be large print knockout.
