Thanks for your comprehensive response. However I must be doing something wrong. I started following your instructions but at 2): I opened my computer and typed in what you wrote - however the computer came up with the following error message: "windows could not find the file "c:\programfiles\adobe\photoshopelements7.0\Plug-ins\FileFormats"
Where do I go from here...?
Sorry to sound dumb..
2.
Good evening
I have brought a new PC running Windows 7. It came with Photoshop Elements 7 preinstalled. However the camera raw plug-in is version 5.2. I wish to update it to 5.6 so it can read my Canon 5D Mk II files. (I wish to have a backup raw converter to DPP)
Loading Elements 7, clicking "Help","Updates" and downloading does not work. Instead, I downloaded ACR Ver 5.7 directly from Adobe direct and saved it to my computer
Unfortunately I do not understand how to manually load it up into Elements 7
My question is...how do I manually replace ACR 5.2 with ACR 5.6 in Elements 7?
Please remember I am not a computer geek so apologies if this is a dumb question...
3.
I was out today with my 5D Mk II and 70 - 200mm f4L lens (non IS) photographing moving trains (average speed of 30-40mph).
All of them were unsharp !
I had this problem with my old 5D of late (same lens) but when I first got the camera, I was getting a high keeper rate. Then I was questioning my technique going down the pan, defective AF and wondered even if the lens was at fault.
With the 5D II set to Ai servo, I selectively changed the focus point and alternated between AV and M mode.
Where shutter speeds were too low, motion blur looked fairly obvious. However at higher shutter speeds where trains were only going about 10-20 mph, pictures were still unsharp.
How do I know whether the unsharp pictures are a function of...?
1) too low a shutter speed
2) not enough camera-to-subject distance
3) Ai servo not locking focus correctly
I've a feeling it's No. 3 because static tests using the same body/lens in One-shot mode with shorter camera-to-subject distance gave me sharp pictures. But I would like confirmation please
Assuming I am allowed to post samples, here are three... The camera box is in one-shot mode for comparison

  4.
John A - I did this (twice)
William Kahn - I took up your suggestion, the updates started to install but then got stuck and aborted. I restarted and tried again and even turned off my firewall. Still no luck !
It's very late so I'll try again tomorrow. My PC isn't even a year old...
Thanks for suggestions. I'll let you know tommorrow how I get on
5.
Good evening
I have been searching through the threads for a solution but nothing seems to work for me.
I have CS4 with ACR ver 5.0 and in Bridge, it displays CR2 thumbnails but no pictures.
I understand I need ACR ver 5.2 or above for Bridge to read these files
I have (or thought I had) downloaded ver 5.6 from the Adobe website
The problem still remains - ie CR2 thumbnails and no images (and ACR still displaying ver 5.0)
So what now...?
I don't really want to have to convert to DNG first and I know I can use DPP but...is there a solution?
I am running Windows Vista if that helps
6.
Like Anothony, I was a committed Canon user since getting my original 5D in mid 2006. At that time, Zoombrowser did everything for me until I discovered CS2 that could do extra. Upgrading to the Mk II was just a natural progression for me (along with CS4) and I just expected to upload the CD and carry on as before. So much for compatibility eh...you'd think the CD shipped with the camera would work...

  7.
Robin
I formatted the CF card in-camera before I started shooting
After shooting I inserted the CF card into my card reader. All the images downloaded (as normal) onto my hard drive
So the answer to your question is "no".
So as puppy face mentions, the latest Zoombrowser software won't allow RAW conversion (but I still don't understand why)
Now I'm trying to open with Adobe Bridge without success but that is getting off topic now...

  8.
Hi Victoria
I started another thread because nobody had answered yours. I downloaded version 6.4 from the Canon website only to find out (and be told on this forum by the above poster) that my 5D MK II RAW files cannot be processed through Zoombrowser. I would have to use DPP or another editing program.
I'm afraid I can't help with your camera, try looking it up on the Canon website and see if it is on the "supported list" Are you connecting your camera direct to your PC? Can you not just download the memory card?
Good luck
9.
Good evening
I took delivery of this baby today and shot a few pics.
I then uploaded the CD to my PC (Windows Vista). Now I have a wee problem...
I also have a 5D Classic. Uploaded the CF card from this camera, able to edit in the (new) DPP software - no problems
However, I also uploaded the CF card from my 5D II. (I made sure I formatted it in the camera first). Upon opening Zoombrowser, I get the following messages: "These images are not supported by RAW Image Task" and "Selected folder is not supported by DPP. Select a different folder in Zoombrowser EX and then try starting DPP again".
What is the problem here...?
Does DPP version 6.3 not support "older" CF cards...!? It's a Sandisk Extreme IV 4GB which I have used successfully in my 5D classic. Remember, I DID format it in the 5D II before I started shooting.
Any advice would be most welcome
10.
Mazda Zulu, well done for the admission - you are an "L'holic" (L meaning lens in this instance). You need to start the 12-steps to recovery...:)
You seem to have two 35L's...? or is that a typo. Personally I would keep them all. If you are anal about IQ then keep the L's (at least) as the 5D II and 7D need good glass.
I've never used Sigma or Tokina lenses (and therefore cannot comment on their IQ) but personally I would keep the 11-16 as a wide angle option for the 7D and trade the 18 - 135 for a decent macro like the 100mm f2.8 or 2.8L

  11.
I always back up my RAW files before editing (I used to back up to CD but prefer external hard drives).
I was a second photographer at a wedding last year and was asked for the original RAW files. When I told the bride (whom I knew well) that she wouldn't be able to view them on her PC, nor could they be printed by a lab, she realised that it wasn't quite the same as giving a set of negatives...
She ended up with JPEGs

  12.
Indeed, it's the consumer (i.e. us) that pay. Now that the 5D II is over a year old and settled into the Canon line, I think it's worth the upgrade for me personally. I don't need a 1D series (though I like the extra AF points); the Rebel series are too small for me whilst the 5D is just the right size (+ I'm used to FF with film). Crop sensor doesn't suit my shooting style (although I have a 30D as backup).
Perhaps I should just get a TS-E lens before its price shoots up into the stratosphere...and get the 5D II later in the year. But then as camera electronics get more complicated, there's more to go wrong.
Decisions...decisions...

  13.
Thanks Guys
The UK was the same, printing money and throwing it away like there was no tomorrow. Guess stores will always find an excuse to raise prices even if Canon don't. I'm just glad I bought my 851.2L before it went up £80-90 at the beginning of this year.
The 5D II is the natural choice for me so I'll just have to do it. Can't wait to try my 85L on it...
