1. Thank you all, that's very helpful.

Sandy - I made the changes just a couple of hours ago, so perhaps as you say I may need to wait.

Ludmilla - I will follow your instructions, (which may or may not be what I did - I'm getting confused ... ) and see if that works by, say, Monday.

And I thought exposure compensation was complicated!

    Best,

    Paul

  2. Hi, I've entered Photo.net for the first time in a decade, have updated my profile, and in the process typed in a new screen name. Most of my other new details have saved. My new screen name is there on my account info page, properly saved, including after logging out and back in, but the actual name that appears on the screen is the old one.

I've clicked all the save buttons I can see - is "screen name" the wrong field for the name that shows here?

The other things that won't save, even on the account page, are my location and where I shoot - far less important, mind.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

    Paul

  3.
Thank you - you're right that they were read only, and I've now changed that, but it still won't apply the changes to all pics. I think it's to do with me not selecting the whole set. I have to somehow tell it which files to apply the info to. I've tried opening in thumbs and doing shift+click to select all, but I can't see a way to edit any info in the thumbs screen. I have to go back to the main screen, where I only seem to have one pic selected (well, open) at a time.

  4.
I have (I think!) a basic question about Irfan View.
What I want to do: I shoot on film, and get the negs scanned to CD. I want to take shots from these CDs and put them on a memory stick with some written info attached. So that I can look at a picture, click a tab, and see the camera, film and lens I used and the date it was shot, but also retain the date of the CD and the original file name for ease of locating the negs. The best I can think of is to transfer a whole folder (one film) from the CD to a holding folder on the stick, create IPTC info for the batch, which captures camera, film and date, and then go into individual shots if, say, I switched lenses, or want to record a person's name or other interesting fact. Then I can transfer the shots I want to keep to sub-folders (People Colour, People BW, Landscape, Dogs etc) and delete the rest.
What I have done: So ... I have transferred one folder (one film) from a CD to the "Holding Bay" folder on my memory stick. Then I opened shot one in Irfan View, and did Image - Information - IPTC info - Options - Edit first file only, apply text to all files, plus "append new text to old text" (the latter so I could make individual edits for each shot). Under the description tab, in "Caption (description)" I added the info that would apply to the whole lot, being camera, film and date of shooting. Then I clicked "write", which took me back to a yellow-bordered pop-up showing the image properties. I clicked "OK".
What happened: The image info I had just created was saved for that shot, but did not apply to any other shots. I have closed and reopened IV but this made no difference.
Why I'm here: Irfan's forum isn't taking new users - they're full - and the "search forum" option brings no results for IPTC or similar. I'd greatly appreciate if anyone on here could help with this? How do I get my edits to IPTC to save and apply to all images in the folder? And if there's some easier way to achieve the same broad objective of putting free text info on a group of pics, and then adding some more for individual shots, do tell ...
Thanks so much! And apologies if any of my IT descriptions are feeble or odd, I'm not so good with computer things.

  5.
Thank you so much for these helpful suggestions, I really appreciate the response.
John - mine does have a screw, but it's tantalisingly out of reach, half hidden behind the interior casing. I'll experiment, but doubt that I'll be able to access it.
Rob - mine also has the lockpin, and yes, the edge of the groove where it sits is vertical on the left hand side, slanted on the right. As you say, when you press the rewind button it lifts free of the shaft to allow easy movement. I've just tried applying light finger pressure on the sprockets while winding on, aiming to mimic film under tension, and this actually sends the pin up the sloped side of the groove, so that it sits up top. It clicks down on the next wind-on, as it would after loading a new film. I'm guessing this throws the torque out while the pin is in the rewind position.
I hate giving up on things, so will probably look for some 12 exp film and put up with losing a couple of frames each time.
Thanks again to everyone; interesting that this seems to be a common problem.

  6.
My first post here, so please let me know if I break any rules somehow. Here's the q: I have a Zeiss Ikon Contina, the non-folding viewfinder type. I've run two test films, and on each the first few shots are fine, but then I get multiple exposures. These get worse (ie more multiple) as the roll goes on. It seems that at first I might get one properly aligned image, overlaid by the left of another image, and the right half of a third. By the end of the roll, there are just loads of images stuck together in a comical way. Before I fork out for a repair, I wanted to check if there's anything I might be doing wrong. After all, when I open the camera back and turn the lever, the takeup spool appears to turn as normal. Is it possible for the wind-on mechanism still to be faulty if the spool is turning? Then again, it's empty when I do this, so maybe it loses strength as the used film builds up?
I've noticed that the film winds over rather than under the spool, so I'm wondering if there's a different way of loading this camera compared to the old Zenit I'm used to (I just stick the leader in a slot, wind on while pressing gently to make the plastic bits poke through the sprocket holes, then shut the back).
Should I pay the £70 plus VAT for a repair, or load another roll in some special way?
Thoughts much appreciated.
