You probably need to upgrade Adobe Camera Raw. In Photoshop CS4, click on Help, then click on Updates...
Run the updates. ACR is up to version 5.6.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. I'm in Houston, so it wasn;t an issue with cold. I took the camera to a local repair shop and they said the D70 has a notorious problem with the CF card assembly. They replaced it and it works fine.

I ran into this same problem. I took my camera to a repair shop and showed the image to the guy. He said the D70 has a notorious problem with the Compact Flash assembly. I was also getting proiblems with CHA and FOR errors. They replaced that module and the camera works fine. I did replace the camera with a D300s this Christmas. That one is awesome!!!

I see some of the posts that indicate that some photographers have both a D700 and a D300S (or a D3 and a D300S). If you have a full frame camera, what are some of the main reasons that you would use a D300S? If it is to take advantage of the crop factor, couldn't you accomplish that with a teleconverter on the D700? I currently have a D70 and am ready to make the upgrade - just not totally sure which path to take. Any input is appreciated.

My D70 got the CHA errors. I could get rid of it for awhile by ejecting the card and reseating it. It turns out that the CF card assembly in the camera was bad. I found that out about 4 years after I purchased the camera. I had it replaced and it works fine. I recommend taking the camera back to the store or send it in for warranty work.

If I am not mistaken, the NEFs will open in Adobe Camera Raw and then will need to be saved as a TIF or PSD file. I tried to open directly from CS4 and it opened Camera Raw.
