I am considering a trip to Yellowstone around the Labor Day Holiday. Has anyone
been here at that particular time of the year? Is it a good time to go: we'll be
traveling with two small kids and I wanted to make sure it still won't be snowed
out and inaccessible for the large part.
Thank you in advance.

Anything and everything you see on the web (including these words right now) have already been 'downloaded and saved' to your computer (although temporarily).
<p>
You're better off letting folks see decent quality images on the site and offering full quality images for sale/licensing.

Soumya,
<p>Nice photo. I'd say about $200-$250 depending on how much you think he might be willing to pay. Costco does some nice enlargements for about $10. That's about what I charge for prints on <a href=http://www.indospectrum.com>http://www.indospectrum.com
</a>
<p>
All the best!

Jennifer,
<p>
I host <a href=http://www.indospectrum.com>indospectrum</a> with Lunarpages.com and they offer an excellent amount of bandwidth and diskspace for < $10 a month. I get about 2000 PVs a day and have almost 1500 photos on indospectrum and I still barely get to 15 to 20GB in monthly bandwidth usage. They are pretty reliable too.
<p>
Bandwidth problems are nice to have! If you ever hit the limit that your webhost allows you are doing well indeed.
<p>
All the best

Does anyone have a ballpark figure of what to ask for this use: a
gallery/custom framing shop called me wanting the rights to print and sell a 6
foot or 8 foot (yes feet!) print of an image on my website
(http://www.indospectrum.com). The final customer is a casino. So this is
going to be pretty much a full wall print. They need the original digital file
so they can print it on their own Epson.
They said $500 is what they usually pay, which seems rather low but I don't
know and need some guidance. This is for a one-time use (only for the casino
print) and they are willing to sign an agreement to that effect.
Any suggestion/guidance is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi Derek,
I've got photos and a travelogue from my trip up at <a href=http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/dakota.html>http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/dakota.html</a>.
I agree with the other reply which said that 2-3 weeks might be on the longer side then but maybe you will absorb more and take even better pictures.
Enjoy,

So many high quality responses on this thread.
<p>
Bob's very right - think about the skeleton of your site before you get too far deep. While there's no way you will get every good idea upfront, there's much to be said for a good plan initially. Small changes down the road can be handled via re-directs in your htaccess file.
<p>
I have learned much from Q-T's and Philip Greenspun's sites. Some of my own thoughts on setting up efficient sites are in the 'Web' section of <a href=http://www.indospectrum.com/sitemap.html>my website</a>.
<p>
I just changed to a plan that has PHP/MySQL and all my pages are now dynamically generated without my changing any URLs. htaccess is black magic! If you need any help feel free to write me an email and I will be glad to help in any way that I can but the link above should have the basics in terms of Cascading Style Sheets and htaccess.

I recently saw the PrimeFilm 3650U on sale at Costco.
<P>
The marketing specs look good: ICE, USB 2.0, 48bit color and 3600dpi
etc. Reviews on the net seem to be few and far between.
<P>
I'd like to ask if anyone has used this specific model and what
their experiences were.

Thanks Veit,
<P>
As a follow-up, does anyone know of a Windows utility - either stand alone or a plugin to Windows explorer - that can then help to search for the contents of a directory for files whose EXIF or IPTC contains the search words.
<P>
Say, I type in "fog" in my image list above and I get 1.jpg. Any such software out there?
<P>
I think the IPTC Info perl script can be hacked to have a nice UI show up which can then recursively search all the files for the EXIF/IPTC but are there any readily available utilities with all the bugs worked out?
Thanks.
-
Q-T,<P>
Thanks, IPTC Info is just what I was looking for.
-
Thanks Craig and Bob,<P>
Yes I will use my SSN as the tax id. <P>I think I need to figure this out a bit more as they want to know if I am 1099 "reportable" or not.<P>Any ideas on what that '1099 reportable' might mean?
-
Thanks Veit,<P>
I guess I am more interested in the IPTC than the EXIF. Since that is something I add on later in Photoshop, rather than at the time of downloading, I'd like to see if there's a program which I can point to the source directory of .jpgs and get an output as a csv file with file name and the keywords.
<P>
Does the program do this?
-
On some websites, I see photographs that have their full EXIF/IPTC
metadata displayed alongside them. How is this done automatically?
Does anyone know if Photoshop CS has a way to read this metadata off
the image files.
<P>
Any other (non PS) software will also do. I am looking for a utility
(e.g a perl script) to which I can input a file with the file paths
of a bunch of images to which I have added the EXIF/IPTC etc and
have an output file which is a pipe-separated or csv file of the
image name and the keywords.
<P>
For example my input file is<br>
1.jpg <br>
2.jpg<br>
3.jpg<br>
and my output file is<br>
1.jpg|San Francisco, Golden Gate, Fog<br>
2.jpg|Paris, Eiffel Tower, Sunset<br>
3.jpg|Monarch Butterlfy, Santa Cruz
<P>
Thanks for any suggestions

A company recently licensed an image from me and wants to know my
company's tax ID number and if it is "1099 reportable". I don't have
a company.
<p>
Is there a way to get paid without this tax id? I have asked them if
they can't just write out a check to me; but I wanted to ask on this
forum what other methods usually work.
<P>
Also, if they send me a check today and I only deposit it after Jan
1st, do I report it in this year's taxes or next year's?
<P>
Thanks.

With three NPs within driving distance, I'd spend my time there instead of in Seattle itself - unless you are keen to get cityscapes.

David is right - the South Rim is far more accessible. However the North Rim is supposedly far more scenic and far less crowded.
<P>
One place easily reached from the South Rim is the watchtower. I don't see too many photographs of it but it is really worth taking a look at and photographing. You can also get a clearer view of the Colorado River from this side.

Brad,
<P>
To get the Golden Gate in the FG and the skyline in the BG, here's what you need to do. Drive across the bridge into Marin County (going North that is) and as soon as you are across, make a right (I forget the name of the exit now but it's right after the northern vista point) and loop back. Climb up the hill to the right rather than get back on the bridge. Try and drive all the way up to the top (Hawk Hill is what I think it is called) and you can get lots of Brigge-against-Skyline shots. If you are high enough, you can get the entire span w/o a real wide angle but if you want the classic Transameria Bldg inside the Bridge shot you will need a long telephoto.
<P>
My pictures of SF are <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/sf.html">here</a> and <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/sf2.html">here</a> but no good bridge-skylines yet.

It's pretty bright outside so ISO 100 should be good in the day. Before I made a trip I asked photo.netters and one person said that the problem, if anything, was that it would be <i>too</i> bright and contrasty.
<P>
Anyway for a <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/ind.html">Aug-Sep trip through Southern India</a> I used ISO 400 exclusively and I was quite happy with the results.
<P>
Have a good trip.

If you like caves and caverns, <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/dc.html">Luray Caverns</a> is not far away from D.C. and is worth a visit.

And here are the <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/travels/crater_lake.html">Crater Lake photographs</a>

I wanted to close this thread with a quick thanks to those who responded. Headed up Medford and back down on the Redwood Coast. I'll post some photos soon.

Hi,
<P>
I am headed out of the SF bay area to Oregon's Crater Lake NP.
<P>
What's the better route after Weed on I-5. Via Klamath Falls or via
Medford? This in terms of what is more scenic and/or more easy to
drive on.
<P>
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

They DO lose quality with XP rotation.
<P>
For lossless rotation, try <a href="http://www.irfanview.com">Irfanview</a>. Irfanview has got to be one of the best behaved pieces of software I have seen. Plus, the author is responsive to email. I have been bombarding him with suggestions and he's always polite about rolling them into the product in the future.

This might be straying from Joe's original qn but naming and managing images is quite an interesting problem.
<P>
I think it is best to add info into the EXIF/IPTC because I think XP and Google will soon sniff that meta data too. So you can keep the image name specific to the date/time and some basic cataloguing logic.
<P>
More of my thoughts are <a href="http://www.indospectrum.com/articles/manage_digital_library.html">here</a>.
